Work it – Physique 57

Work It

If you live in the Midwest, you know that winter (after the holidays) SUCKS. The last thing I want to do when I first get out of my warm bed is bear the elements and drive to the gym — I shudder at the thought!

But I’d still like to fit into my clothes come spring, and I like food way too much to cut back. So I’m in quite the predicament over here, kiddos. Luckily the folks at Physique 57 are mind-readers. Alas, they sent me a solution!

But first, a bit about the company (from the web site):

Physique 57™ is a focused and proven cardiovascular program of isometric exercises and orthopedic stretches. Physique 57™ tones your seat, abdominals, thighs and arms; strengthens your legs and back; and improves posture to produce a beautiful, sexy body. Our interval training sets use your own body weight for resistance, and through dynamic exercises your muscles are targeted and overloaded to the point of fatigue, then stretched for relief. We call our process Interval Overload – overloading the muscle to create long, lean sexy muscles.

With Kelly Ripa as one of their clients, I figured they were pretty legit. Lucky for us, you don’t have to live in NYC and pay for the classes to get the same workout! Physique 57 offers a complete workout package available for purchase online. The company was kind enough to send me the full body workout set, which includes:

The day I received the package, I had already done THE SHRED, but I wanted to test out the workouts. What can I say, I’m hardcore ;) I figured I’d go easy on myself and popped in the 30 minute express workout DVD.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

THUD.

hear that? It’s the folks at Physique 57 laughing their HEADS OFF.

DEAR LORD.

If you thought Jillian was tough, you’ve got another thing comin’ with these gals! Wowza. There were times in this workout when I truly thought I was going to die (I tend to exaggerate). I was CURSING like a sailor throughout this muscle mutilation.

But I loved every second of it.

The workout really does target all areas of the body. No muscle group is spared! If you are looking for a complete body workout — look no further. And if the “express” workout was this much of a demon, I can only imagine the 57 MINUTE version. As soon as my legs stop trembling, I’ll give it a try.

I also really liked the fun props the workout incorporated (chair, playground ball). It kept things interesting, that’s for sure! I will say that I prefer Jillian’s overall demeanor and personality (not that we’re comparing, anyway), but the instructor was a bit too peppy for my liking. That being said, if she’s gonna give me a good workout and make me sweat, I’ll ignore her annoying quips.

Bottom line: if you want a serious workout, and are up for something different, order the Physique 57 full body workout — you won’t regret it. OK maybe your legs will, but those sexy grooves in them will thank you later!

What is your favorite exercise DVD? Or how do you workout at home in the bitter cold?

  1. I’ve really been wanting to try Physique 57! I’m going to start saving my money to buy the system, I guess, since I’ve heard nothing but good (and terribly hard) things about it! I just tried a new DVD by Jackie Warner and it really kicked my butt!

  2. Ohh that sounds like a good work out! I am doing 30DS as my cross training while training for my 10k run. I may have to look into this after that though! :)

My favorite DVD so far has been 30DS. The dance ones make me feel silly and I can never follow the routines. :p I use my condo’s ammenity center (it’s AWESOME) and I usually walk to it (unless it’s raining) luckily I live in Coastal NC and it rarely gets below freezing. I can handle a 2 minute walk iat 35 degrees.

  3. I just got 30-day shred the other day, and after checking it out i think it’s going to be my favorite thus far. I’d LOVE to try Physique 57 though, since you and Tina at CnC gave it such rave reviews!

  4. I’ve never heard of these dvds..jillian michaels are the only at home work outs I do. If it’s harder than jillian then I’m interested!

Wow that sounds like an awesome workout!! I have been going to the gym and when the mojo is right i go for a hike through the woods. But sometimes it would be really nice to workout at home.

  6. That workout sounds crazy! Although I kind of like the feeling of shakiness after a workout … for some reason, I attribute that to a good workout (and then eat something, pronto!).

My favourites are the Biggest Loser DVDs – I love that they’re customizable.

I’m a really big fan of yoga DVDS, especially my Baron Baptiste one. I don’t have the extra cash or live very close to any studios, so I use videos when I need to stretch out.

It sounds awesome! I like working out during lunch and there is a gym in my work building so that usually takes care of things. I also am starting to brave the elements again and run outside on weekends. Yeah, it’s cold out! This really does sound great. I love Jillian’s workouts but it’s been a while since I’ve done them.

  15. Hey thanks for stopping by my blog! I hadn’t heard of Physique 57 until I read Tina’s post about it. I’ll have to look into it! I’m doing The Shred right now and really liking it. I’ve only done Level 3 once though and it was brutal!

  16. How fun, I love workout DVDs. Jackie Warner One on One is my fav.

  17. Nice. that sounds like a great dvd. anything that makes 30ds seem easy…. wow. you’d be better off going to the gym.

  18. Dang; tougher than Jillian? Was this a guy friendly workout? I may need to check this one out.

    • Jeremy – The instructor is super girly, and might irritate you, but you can definitely do all the moves (unless you don’t like shakin’ your hips, cuz there is some of that ;) )

  19. Hey there! I live in NYC and I’ve always wanted to try Physique 57–but it’s a bit expensive for me. Glad to hear it’s a great work out!

The first time that I took a P57 class, I almost dropped dead. But then I became reincarnated or something, because I keep going back.

I’ve been working out consistently for years and have pretty much gotten bored with all of the dvds I have ie kettelbells, barrys bootcamp, p90x, and so on. Physique 57 is by far one of the most challenging and fun workouts ive ever done. It is also the easiest on my joints. Enjoy! You all will love it!
