Daily Delish – Everything’s better when you sleep on it ;)

Especially overnight oats! I had never tried them before and after reading and seeing them appear on MANY blogs, I finally jumped at the chance of ordering them for breakfast one morning on our Chicago trip. I had never seen this item on the menu before, so I was excited to try it out without having to make it myself!

This dish was ordered at The Corner Bakery

overnight oats

Technically referred to as ’swiss oatmeal,’ “the chilled European breakfast cereal is made with rolled oats, fresh green apples, bananas, currants, dried cranberries, low fat yogurt, and skim milk. Served with homemade Sweet Crisp.”

In short (mainly because I’m exhausted from a long day of jury duty),this was DELICIOUS! It was initially a bit odd to be eating oatmeal cold, but the flavors were so scrumptious and it really tasted like a thick, creamy yogurt with lots of deliciousness stirred in.

How many of you are overnight/Swiss oats fans?

Jury Duty lasted until 7pm tonight, so I am currently enjoying my favorite takeout and waiting for the Mister to come home so we can watch Biggest Loser.

Update

Good morning, all!

I know I didn’t get to ‘Make it’ Monday, and for that I apologize. I’ll make it up to you next week — in the meantime, check out last week’s Ahi Tuna or my archive of recipes.

Jury Duty is going well – SO interesting! But I can tell you that I have NO downtime, and I’ve been getting home later than I would if I were at my regular job — so bear with me as I try and schedule posts — you all know how important my ‘relax time’ with the Mister is ;)

In the meantime, I figured I’d at least give you a reason to smile this morning…

Yes, that is LeBron James and yes, he is dribbling me ;)

And yes, I’m a huge dork!

That’s all for now! I promise I’ll see you later (at least for Daily Delish)

Daily Delish – Bistro 110

So I shared my birthday dinner with all of you, but you know there was a birthday lunch!

The Mister and I managed to find one of the few non-touristy spots tucked away off of the Mag Mile, Bistro 110.

Just steps from the Magnificent Mile, Bistro 110 is a legendary Chicago favorite that lures locals, visitors (and oftentimes celebrities) with its chic style and neighborhood charm. Our fashionable, friendly atmosphere buzzes with the energy and flair of an authentic French bistro as it has been for the past 20 years. Accented with gleaming copper and contemporary murals by renowned artists, it’s a fantastic place for casual meals or special occasions.

You can sip cocktails in our Vavro lounge and savor a delicious meal straight from Chef Dominique’s wood-burning oven. Our signature oven-roasted whole garlic served with warm, crusty French bread is just a prelude to the culinary delights that await you!

Your eyes bugged out a bit when you read of the roasted garlic and crusty bread, didn’t they? Well, imagine mine when it came to the table!

An excerpt from our lunch conversation:

The Mister: You are so happy right now, aren’t you?

Me: lfgy.shkjdfbhvsjhgvyfkjfummmmmmmmmsfgliuf,mmmmmm (stuffed mouth mumbling)

The Mister: Does this alone make this worth it?

Me: YES, this is all I need for the whole trip!

The Mister: I meant, at this restaurant, you dolt. But knowing you, that doesn’t surprise me.

Seriously I could eat bread and butter all the live long day. Throw in the roasted garlic and I’m on freeway express to a food coma.

Luckily I managed to pace myself so that I could still enjoy some of restaurant’s other offerings. The moment I read pumpkin soup, I knew that’s what I wanted. Um, hello??? Pumpkin soup on Halloween. I mean, can you think of anything more fitting? I think not. Knowing that the soup would most likely be pretty rich, the Mister and I decided to share a salad (he ordered french onion soup).

Let me paint the picture for you: You all know how seriously I take birthdays, so I’m sure at this point the Mister was thankful that I hadn’t yet pulled out a birthday hat and noise blower. After the garlic and butter euphoria, my excitement was verging on hysteria. Once this delightful autumnal dish came out (in a SQUASH!), the Mister shot me a look that is normally reserved for a toddler — for he knew that squealing would ensue (I’m sure the frantic photo session also put him over the edge!) — thanks for being patient with me, Mister!

The soup paired with the crisp, flavorful salad was the perfect birthday lunch!

Next time you are in Chicago and looking for a quaint, romantic spot to have a delicious meal, (or even a cup of tea/coffee!) Be sure to check out Bistro 110.

Daily Delish – Birthday treats

Good morning, friends!

Did not sleep well last night (due to our neighbors midnight car trouble – somehow his HORN was stuck. The horn was blaring in 30 second intervals for a good hour. Finally the Mister went outside to see what was going on an convinced the guy to let it rest until morning. Apparently the neighbors’ ‘morning’ is 5:45 a.m., which is when the horn promptly started blaring again. Today was supposed to be my sleep-in day, too. GRRR). Anyway, after that whole debacle I opened the door and was greeted with freezing rain. GLORIOUS! Oh well, at least I was able to use my new Burberry umbrella ;) (silver lining, people, silver lining).

Anyway, I figured reflecting back on my Birthday treats would cheer me up — plus, I promised I would share them with you and I NEVER break promises ;)

Did I mention the James Hotel is awesome? Next time you are going to Chicago, please check them out, best customer service ever — and I would say that even if I was paying full price. I mean, any hotel staff that sends you complimentary buttercream RED VELVET birthday cupcakes gets a gold star from this girl.

The mister and I split them. Of course I got the extra one — I was the Birthday Girl, after all — a title I do not use loosely. I told him he was lucky enough to get the two he managed to pry from my hands I was happy to share my treats with him.

Later that evening, after my birthday dinner, we came back to the room to order room service. My Birthday, my choice. — NOTE: I realize that at this point I might be sounding like a brat, but I don’t care ;)

Don’t worry I selected something I knew we would both love: ‘A slice of prime.’ What is ‘a slice of prime,’ you ask? Otherwise known as a slice of HEAVEN, this chocolate mousse cake was topped with gooey, caramelized marshmallow and served alongside a scoop of s’more ice cream — need I say more?

So as you can see, I certainly celebrated my birthday with a few splurges, but isn’t that why we work out?! All about balance, people! One day of indulging is not going to make my paints tight (OK, maybe temporarily) or derail my usual healthy activities. Keep this in mind as the holidays approach. Yes, if you are splurging the entire SEASON, you might have a problem, but a day of indulgences will not cause you to gain weight. So instead of having a seasonal baked good every day, or helping yourself to one of each of the goodies in your employee lounge, try and continue your usual healthy habits throughout the season. Then on the actual holiday you can indulge, eat all of your favorite foods, have an extra piece of grandma’s pumpkin pie and not feel guilty about it. I’ll talk more about ‘getting through the holidays’ later, but just wanted to get all of you thinking about it!

What is your favorite birthday treat?

Daily Delish – Bandera birthday dinner

Good morning, everyone! I still can’t get over the fact that it is NOVEMBER already — so cliche, but where has the time gone?! As I tweeted this morning, I’m currently a bit conflicted. See, I want to keep up my Halloween decorations, but I also want to start listening to Christmas carols (too soon?) – what is a girl to do?!

So as you know, the Mister and I spent my birthday in Chicago this past weekend. We were lucky enough to stay at the swanky James Hotel (which I’ll share more of later) — and when I say lucky, I mean it. My uncle hooked us up with a fantastic deal (he works for Travel and Leisure and between him and my aunt, they pretty much know everyone in Chicago – so thanks, Uncle Graham ;) )

Some of you may know that the best Chicago dinning is NOT off the Magnificant Mile. Seriously — the best restaurants in Chicago are in the surrounding neighboorhoods like Bucktown, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, The Loop, etc. Not good for the Mister and I, as we were hoping to spend the majority of our evening chatting at a romantic restaurant and cuddling up watching a movie, and NOT taking a long cab/train ride.

Luckily, I remembered that one of the best options on the Magnificant Mile was only a few steps from our hotel! Bandera, a casual sophisticated (yes, it’s possible) spot, offers live jazz music and an array of delicious options to choose from. Plus, it’s not a tourist trap (which I HATE).

The Mister and I started with the chips and queso and some of the restaurant’s signature cornbread.

The queso served with the chips was actually served cold! It definitely wasn’t what I was expecting, but I still liked it — but it had quite a kick , and you all know I’m a baby when it comes to spicy food. I let the Mister enjoy most of this dish. Mainly because my eyes (and mouth) were transfixed and glued to the cornbread. Holy mother, this was good! With a crunchy crust protecting the buttery melt-in-your-mouth goodness (with actual corn kernels baked in!), this was the best batch of cornbread I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating.

Next up: our entrees! Knowing that I wouldn’t be able to ‘go light’ on the corn bread, I decided to choose a salad. Of course I still selected the Macho Salad, which consisted of  roasted chicken, avocado, dates, almonds, goat cheese and CORNBREAD CROUTONS! Check out the monster!

This was amazing. Of course the Mister helped me polish it off!

While I would have loved order one of Bandera’s desserts, I was much too full to manage another bite! (I know, right — what is wrong with me?) Not to worry though, I still had cake on my Birthday ;) The Mister and I decided to give ourselves some time to digest and ordered room service when we were hungry again. I’ll be sure to share that decadence with you later ;)

All in all, it was a fantastic birthday celebration and I can’t think of a better way to spend my quarter of a century. The Mister and I had a great time reflecting over the past year and discussing what we hope to achieve in the upcoming year(s). Of course we shared many laughs and kisses — I swear, some people probably thought we were newlyweds (we’ve still got it, baby!). Thank you so much, Mister, for always knowing how to make me smile and for giving me the only gift I’ll ever need — YOU!

Okay, okay, enough of the cheesiness! If you are still reading and haven’t gone to the bathroom to puke, I thank you ;)

I’ll be back later for ‘Work it’ Wednesday!
