Daily Delish – when cheating feels too good

I CHEATED.

Remember my lenten commitment? Well, I tried not to think about it as I was stuffing my face with THIS:

Yes, that is my beloved za.

Before you start casting your judgements, let me EXPLAIN!

The Mister and I had BIG news to celebrate! He made some amazing achievements professionally and I am so incredibly proud of him. He wanted a za, and how could I possibly let down this charming smile?

This photo is more than 5 years old, but I love it ;)

How are you guys doing on your lent commitments? Any other cheaters to join me in my corner of shame?

Try it – the long-awaited CARAMEL Oikos!

I fouuuund it! (name the movie!)

Yes, after weeks of letting jealousy and resentment build up inside me as I watched some of my favorite bloggers stuff their pretty faces with caramel delights, I finally found some of my own Caramel Oikos ;)

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Oikos, so when I heard they had sweet dessert-like flavors out on the market, I just HAD to get my hands on them.

While I wasn’t able to find the chocolate flavor, I did spot the caramel this past weekend. Of course, the Mister got into them before I did, but THIS time, he was scared of my wrath gracious enough to leave me one (that’s my love!).

Now, let me just say right off the bat that I AM NOT a fan of the trickery that yoplait so often commits.

For example: Cinnamon Roll. Really? REALLY, Yoplait? I really hope your cinnamon rolls don’t taste like the “tangy, artificial tasting goop overdose don cinnamon” that you push at the grocery store. If so, you need to get to a Cinnabon right away, like NOW – because you’ve been deprived. And the blueberry cobbler? Don’t get me started. I’m all for making healthy swaps, but please, let’s be real – it tastes like feet — with lots of sugar sprinkled on top.

Needless to say, dessert flavored yogurts don’thave the best track record with me. Nevertheless, I was still pretty jazzed to try the caramel Oikos ;)

It did NOT disappoint.

I think the reason Oikos is able to pull off these flavors is because it is so much creamier than standard yogurt, and the yogurt base is natural in it’s flavor, instead of overpowered by artifical tasting sweetner. As far as sugar in yogurt goes, I really believe less is more (and yes, the queen of frosting actually just said that).

Oikos creates a perfect balance with its rich and creamy yogurt and gooey, sweet caramel. And you know me, I kinda dig balance ;)

Now if only I could get my hands on the CHOCOLATE!

Have you tried Oikos caramel or chocolate yogurt? What are your favorite yogurt flavors?

Daily Delish – Comfort food – simplified!

Wowzers! What a whirlwind of a day!

I apologize for being MIA — but I’m off the cuddle up with the Mister (you know where my priorities are!)

A crazy day calls for a simple, comforting dinner, no?

I roasted up some turkey cutlets and topped with a jar of gravy (so sue me!). This was served alongside frozen sweet corn (heated up, of course!). As you can see, I really went all out today! But we all have these days, don’t we? When even a 20 minute meal sounds overwhelming? Well we all know that I can’t order TAKE OUT!

But who says that “fast food” can’t be homemade and healthy!! Sure, it wasn’t the most inventive, or fun to make, but it did the job in providing an easy, delicious AND healthy meal.

What meal do you make when you crave something “homemade” but are pressed for time? I could use your ideas!

Morning Announcement

Today, Ash Wednesday, marks the first day of Lent. For those of you who don’t celebrate or are not familiar with Lent:

Lent is a 40-day, Christian liturgical season that begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes at the Great Vigil of Easter. Sundays are not included in the 40-day count because every Sunday is a joyful celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. Though not biblical, Lent has long been a tradition in the Christian Church, and it is thought that the tradition of the 40 days recalls the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness, fasting and being tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:1-11). Lent is considered a time of penance and discipline.

During Lent, it is tradition to give something up — mostly things that we do a lot of or find pleasure in. We do this:

  • as a discipline for learning self-control, to free our minds from the chase after material things, to tell ourselves ‘no’ and make it stick;
  • to identify with Christ’s sufferings, and remember what the true pleasures are for followers of Christ;
  • as an act of sorrow over our wrongdoings and our state of sin.

In the past I’ve given up dessert, Snapple iced tea, etc. I’ve also had years where I’ve DONE something Christ-like — i.e. doing a random act of kindness once a day, keeping a gratitude/prayer journal, etc.

This year the Mister and I are giving up… get ready…

Spending money on take out, going out to dinner, etc.

This means, no fancy dinners, no take-out, no starbucks, no ice cream, no pizza, NADA. For 40 days…

What have I gotten myself into?

We both consider this an enormous undertaking, but that’s the whole point of Lent, isn’t it? It SHOULD be hard. As tough as it’s going to be, I’m kind of excited!

There is a slight LOOPHOLE — while WE cannot spend money on dinner/lunch/snacks out we CAN be taken out to dinner. So my next question to all of you is…who wants to take us to dinner? Just kidding! Or am I? ;)

Do you practice Lent? What are you giving up this year?

*No matter what your religion or affiliation, the practice of giving something up and freeing ourselves from material things is a good thing to do every once in awhile. I encourage all of you to evaluate your lives and see if there might be a bit of room to “clean house” and give something up for awhile — you’ll soon realize how appreciate or thankful you are! I think it’s a great “centering” exercise that we can all benefit from!

Daily Delish – The equation for a perfect evening

Good eats+ good service + better company = perfection

As you all know, the Mister and I celebrated Valentine’s Day at home with a classy dinner and indulgent dessert. But we still wanted to go out on the town! So on Saturday night, we treated ourselves to a fancy dinner before we went to see the Broadway touring show, In the Heights (which was amazing, by the way).

We decided to try a spot that has been on my list for AGES. Michaelangelo’s, a fine establishment just across the street from us, has received rave reviews since it opened its doors in 2006. In fact, last year the restaurant was Zagat Rated!

Review highlights:

This romantic retreat offers authentic Northern Italian Cuisine from chef/co-owner Michael Annandoro, along with an extensive selection of wines and a stylish bar area. With a large fireplace for winter and a patio for warmer weather, its an ideal choice for a special night out.

We started with the house multi-grain bread and flavored olive oil.

We ordered our “go-to” Italian appetizer, which is normally any dish that includes mozzarella and prosciutto. As soon as we spotted the “Bufala,” we knew we had to have it. Described on the menu as buffalo mozzarella, prosciutto di parma and roasted red peppers, this dish was the perfect way to kick off our dinner. The mozzarella was rich, creamy and a great match for the salty prosciutto.

Knowing that I’d be ordering an indulgent treat, I thought it would be best to order something light. But light and healthy doesn’t mean flavorless – NO SIREE. This simple arugula salad was packed with incredible flavors! I loved the rich quality of the olive oil and the lemon was such a refreshing touch. You can’t see it in the photo, but the salad contained minced garlic and onion, as well as salty, savory Parmesan cheese. The Mister stole a few bites and proclaimed it to be one of the best salads he’s ever tasted.

For my “dinner” I ordered the Minestrone soup. Without a doubt, this was the heartiest Minestrone I’ve ever had. This thing was chock-full of root vegetables and beans — so filling! It had quite a kick, too (luckily my whimpy taste buds could handle it, though!).

The Mister was kind enough to let me pick from all the decadent dessert offerings. In addition to the standard menu, the serve explained some of the Valentine’s Day features. I heard the words “chocolate bomb” and was sold. The chocolate coating contained rich and creamy chocolate mousse – like a little present from the chocolate Gods! While some chocolate dishes can be too rich and quickly weigh you down, this was the perfect balance. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

The Mister and I decided that we’ll be heading back to Michaelangelo’s very soon. But this time we BOTH plan on ordering soup and salad  – that way we’ll have room for an extra dessert!

This was such a great evening! The ambiance of the restaurant was very romantic and I loved every minute of chatting with the Mister and enjoying his company. Let’s face it, Valentine’s Day dinners have a pretty bad rep. From noisy and over-crowded restaurants, to poor service and cold food, I’ve heard all the horror stories. But if anything, Michaelangelo’s went above and beyond to make sure our dining experience was special. Our waiter was so helpful and attentive and we never felt rushed (unlike my LAST dining experience). If you live in the Cleveland area, make sure you give Michaelangelo’s a try for your next special occasion — they’ll make sure you leave with some great memories ;)
