A Weekend of Firsts

This weekend was not only the Mister’s first Father’s Day, but Beanie’s first MLB game! And the fact that it fell on Father’s Day made the Mister quite happy, indeed ;)

We were lucky enough to score tickets to the social suite through one of my friends at work. The Mister and I kept laughing that Bean is now going to demand first class treatment. It worked out perfectly because we had our own bathrooms, an air conditioned sitting-area, a DESSRT CART – the works! It really was an ideal first-game situation, as we wouldn’t have otherwise ever been able to take him (no thanks, rowdy fans!).

Bean made his presence official with a first-game certificate!

Unfortunately the game was forced into a rain delay and we left around the 7th inning to make it to dinner at The B-Spot (one of Michael Symon’s gems).

Daddy celebrated”his day” with a brew.

he was trying to be fancy. I will refrain from comment ;)

Beanie took in the sights.

Including Daddy’s Bacon milkshake

Yes, you read that correctly — a Bacon Milkshake.

But more on that later ;)

How did you spend Father’s Day?

Summa, Summa, Summatime ;)

Boy have we been busy! So much summer fun!

Last Wednesday, the Mister and I took in a baseball game with our friends Josh and Leann. It was perfect baseball weather! The Mister loved antagonizing everyone by rooting especially loud for the Mets. Unfortunately, Josh, Leann and I could not undo his enthusiasm and the Mets ended up killing the Indians. Oh well, it was still quite fun.

Thursday was Amber’s rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. The excitement in the air was contagious! Everyone was really amped up for Friday’s wedding. Amber’s mother-in-law did a fantastic job with the spread!

Taco time!

I love the concept of dessert (who doesn’t?). Each table showcased a different dessert, encourgaing guests to mingle with the other tables to get their sugar fix.

My favorite of the night was the coconut cake – the frosting was — o.m.g

The next day was WEDDING TIME! A trolley served as our transport – so fun!

Amber looked stunning – no surprise there, though!

Take a look at that cake!

Beautiful, Beautiful girls!

Me and my girl, Megan.

Did I mention there was a cookie table?

All in all, it was an incredible event and I am so grateful to have been a part of it. There’s nothing more refreshing than seeing a couple so madly, deeply in love. I am so incredibly happy for Amber and Jon. The Mister and I had a great time cuttin’ a rug, acting silly and laughing with our friends.

Work it – Does watching sports motivate you to “step up” your own exercise routines? Well, at least it’s good for your brain!

Work It

Good morning, everyone! Yet another muggy day here in Cleveland, Ohio. My hair leaves much to be desired  — imagine a frizzy, limp rats nest. How’s that for specific?

Anyway, it better get nice quick (or I’ve just gotta let it go) because tonight I’m headed to an Indians Game with the Mister and our friends Josh and Leann. Remember when Josh graduated from Law School? This was our gift to him.

Well with all the sports and sporting events I’ve been taking in lately, I’m feelin’ pretty motivated!

But there’s more to it than motivation. A recent study, “Sports Experience Changes the Neural Processing of Action Language”, explored the link between our learned motor skills and our language comprehension about those motor skills.

The interesting finding here is that those with experience, either playing or watching, are actually calling on additional neural networks in their brains to help their normal language comprehension abilities. In other words, the memories of learned actions are linked and assist other cognitive tasks. That sounds pretty much like the definition of embodied cognition and Dr. Beilock’s research has helped that theory take another step forward. In her words, “Experience playing and watching sports has enduring effects on language understanding by changing the neural networks that support comprehension to incorporate areas active in performing sports skills.”

So as you are watching the NBA finals, take pride in your own brain when you hear, “Kobe dribbles the ball to the top of the key, crosses over, drives the lane, and takes it to the basket for two trips over his shoe laces and falls flat on his face.” If you can imagine that play, your left dorsal premotor cortex just kicked into gear!

What does watching sports do for you? Amp you up for your own fitness routines? Motivate you to play it yourself?
