Work it – Get your pedal on!

Work It

Looking to spend less time in the gym? Looking to burn MORE fat? Well, if you are ready to sweat a lot, curse (you can use my name!) and feel the burn, you can shave time off your workouts and inches off your waistline!

As explained in an issue of Men’s Health, Research from the The University of New South Wales has proven that Interval training will accelerate weight loss. What’s interval training? Well interval training involves a series of intense efforts (think very difficult hill) with recovery periods in between (think downhill). The University of New South Wales developed an exercise bike workout routine that burned 3 times the fat compared to a group of that only conducted aerobic training on the bikes. Added bonus? The exercise was done in half the time!

Want to have access to that secret, super effective workout? Look now further! I’ve tracked it down for ya. Behold the ridiculously simple (in theory, anyway) routine…

After thoroughly warming up, follow the following workout routine for 20 minutes:

Intense effort 8 seconds
Recovery 12 seconds
Intense effort 8 seconds
Recovery 12 seconds
Intense effort 8 seconds
Recovery 12 seconds
Intense effort 8 seconds
Recovery 12 seconds
Intense effort 8 seconds
Recovery 12 seconds
Intense effort 8 seconds
Recovery 12 seconds

If you’d been following the plan, you would have now cursed my name roughly 40 times completed 2 minutes of a twenty minute interval workout. Depending on your fitness level, you may need to increase the recovery time at this point. There is no point exhausting yourself before half way.

Try to get through as many minutes as you can, every other day. You’ll be hitting 20 minutes before you know it!

How often do you interval train? Do you find it to be effective for you?

Fashion Friday – Something borrowed

Welcome new readers! Just a quick note that the blog makes a lot more sense if you start at the beginning and read a bit about me.

So you all know by now how awesome my mom is, right? What some of you may not know if that she is quite a fashionista! In fact, taking a good look in her closet is often just like scanning the racks at some of my favorite stores. And I always leave with something ‘new.’ (She is kind enough to overlook the fact that most of her things are returned with spaghetti stains and other results of my klutzy mishaps – love you, mom!)

This week I borrowed one of her skirts that caught my eye. The weather was quite fall-like (love it!), so I paired it with a pair off boots and jean jacket for a laid-back office look. I love this skirt because it could also easily be worn with a tank top and flip flops. But the vibrant colors and black accents make it a perfect transition piece for fall.

The Mister and I are about to hit the road! We plan to be in Toronto by dinner – I can’t wait! I’ll be sure to document my trip well so I can share all of it with you – Let me know if there is anything you want to ‘see!’

ALSO THE FASHION FRIDAY CONTEST WILL TAKE PLACE NEXT FRIDAY – (we’ll always do the second Friday of the month), so make sure you email me your photos!

Fashion Friday – Making summer clothes work for fall

Happy Friday everyone!

After doing a bit of thinking and bouncing some ideas off of the Mister, I have an announcement to make in regards to Fashion Friday.

Instead of holding a contest every week — we’re now going to do it once a month. This will give people a longer window to send in their favorite photos and in turn, I’m sure we’ll have more participants to showcase! In addition, the prize bag we’ll be BETTER! Note: I typically send participants a cool granola bar, some tasty hot tea bags, a sample of lotion or face wash and maybe a fashion magazine (or something of the likes). Now that I’m only sending out one prize pack a week, you can expect it to be kicked up a notch :) — How does this sound to everyone? Please be honest. I’m happy to go back to the old way, I just thought this would be easier for everyone involved.

That being said, I’ll still be posting my personal photos and sharing some fashion trends and advice each week.

I’m excited for this change because instead of having to focus everything on the contest, I’ll be able to do more of what I originally thought I’d be doing in this section, and what it’s intended for - talking real fashion! What works right now? What doesn’t? What works best for your shape? These are the types of issues I’ll be addressing. In addition, feel free to email me throughout the month with questions, etc.!

This week, we’ll be talking about what summer pieces can transition smoothly into FALL. Yes, before packing away all your summer favorites, think about what can work into your fall/winter wardrobe for what I like to call ‘transitional outfits.’ You’ll be surprised how you can ‘make it work’ (yay Tim Gunn!) with what you have to create a completely new look.

For example:

Jersey dress

How to make other key pieces work into fall

Tank tops – Layer underneath a long cardigan — add some chunky jewelry

Floral dress – Add a belt, cardigan and ankle booties

Burmuda shorts – Wear on top of textured tights with a turtle neck or button down down shirt. Layer a  tailord vest or jacket on top. Round out the look with heels.

Mini dress – Wear with opaque tights and knee high boots. Add a long cardigan for extra deminsion.

What is your favorite way to make summer clothes work into fall?

(sorry for no personal photo this week – the Mister took a photo of me this morning that didn’t come out right due to strange lighting!)
