Healthy Travel Tips (Guest Post)

Hi! I’m Erin from Travel, Eat, Repeat and I’m thrilled to guest blog for Shannon while she and the Mister spend time with the Little. Congratulations!

Travel, Eat, Repeat is about finding a healthy balance while traveling. During two years of worldwide exploration before settling down to a real job, I learned lots of tricks for staying healthy and active no matter where you are, all while sticking to a tight budget.

Let’s start with my top healthy travel tip:

Be Flexible

A vacation is not the time to start a new diet. Be willing to adjust your daily food routine and adapt to the culture you’re visiting. If you normally eat oats for breakfast, try a simple French breakfast of bread, jam and coffee. If it sustains millions of French each day, it will sustain you, too. Pack some snacks – you never know when you’ll be stuck on a train without food for hours or head out for long a hike – but don’t bring the contents of your entire kitchen.

Go Grocery Shopping

Shop at grocery stores and markets to save money and get a glimpse at daily life. Even the cheapest youth hostel has a communal kitchen so when in Rome, visit the market for real Italian pasta, fresh produce and Parmigiano-Reggiano to enjoy an authentic Italian meal a fraction of restaurant price. That said, choose a few special meals to eat out. Don’t sacrifice enjoyment for the sake of a budget.

Get Moving and See the City for Free!

If you really want to experience a city up-close and personal, set out on foot. You have more flexibility to visit the places that you want to visit while sneaking in some exercise. Instead of taking the Tube from Regent’s Park to Hyde Park, walk! This 25-minute walk shows you London without tourists and incorporates a 1.2-mile stroll into your day.

Eat Like A Local

Local food is fresh food. See what the locals are eating and order that.

… Even If It Grosses You Out

How many times in your life have you been offered termites on a stick? (Belize) Duck heart on a skewer? (Korea) A kangaroo dog, gator nuggets and emu burger all on one platter? (Australia) It may sound icky but travel is all about experiences, right? Trying something new won’t kill you – unless it’s Japanese fugu (blowfish) – but might taste good and always makes a great story afterward.

Enjoy!

This is right up there with Be Flexible. You’re on vacation and it will be over before you know it. Eat dessert, have a glass or two of wine, sample street food (seriously, eat street food), try something you’d never touch at home and enjoy every minute of your travels.

The Birth Story

Uncategorized

I tried thinking of a clever title for this post, but time is currently limited, as is my creativity, so we’ll just have to go with “The Birth Story.” I know you all understand…

Instead of getting into the nitty gritty, let’s plan a game of numbers, shall we?

4 – Slices of homemade stuffed crust pizza I enjoyed for dinner (5:30 – 2/21/11)

6 – Contractions in the 6:00 p.m. hour – 2/21/11

9 – Contractions in the 7:00 p.m. hour – 2/21/11

12 – Contractions in the 8:00 p.m. hour – 2/21/11

3 – Miles to the hospital

2 – Centimeters dilated (p.s. this is not enough)

2 – Hours instructed to walk the hospital halls

408 – Steps needed to make one lap around the maternity floor (yes, the Mister counted)

2 – Centimeters dialated after the 2 hour walk

(in other words)

0 – Progress made

3 – Miles home

2 – Baths taken at home

0 – Hours slept

3 – Hours spent in torture

4 - Times I thought I was truly going to die

3 – More miles BACK to the hospital (at 3:30 a.m.)

5 – Centimeters dilated (!!!!!!)

938486 – times I considered cutting of my limbs

1 – IV bag to get through before they would give me the epidural

7 – Centimeters dilated after receiving epidural (6:00 am)

1 – Hour spent pain-free ;)

9 – Centimeters dilated (7:00 am)

55 – Minutes spent napping after being told it would be a few hours before I delivered and I should get my rest

7:55 – Time I was woken up to check my progress

10 minutes before the Little was born!

1 – HEAD in sight! (I think the Mister thought they were kidding)

3 – Pushes

10 – Minutes in “active labor”

8:05 – The exact time the Little entered our world

0 – Seconds it takes to fall in love

Thanks again for all your incredible support this past week. I already have so many funny stories to share – our little bean is certainly a character! I’ll be spending this week really soaking him up and spending time with the Mister. But don’t worry! I have lots of fantastic guest posts lined up — you won’t want to miss them ;)

And of course I’ll be dropping by periodically with photos such as this:

I mean seriously? Heart melting…

Fashion Friday – part 2 – “mommy clothes”

Fashion

While I feel rather “unglamorous” – what with just delivering a little Mister, and all, we had a baby birth weight check up at the pediatrician this morning. That meant I had to look somewhat presentable and leave the nursing gown behind.

Cardigan – Anthropologie

Nursing Tank – Bravado

Green shirt – Mossimo

Leggings – Zella

While I didn’t exactly get glammed up, I think I managed to look somewhat cute (despite having only slept about 10 hours in the past 3 days – but who’s counting?!), while still maintaining comfort. Sure, I would have loved some mascara and lip gloss, but I suppose I’m already starting my motherly sacrifices ;)

Here’s hoping I can stay away from the Mom jeans…
