Try it – Hangin’ with the boys

Try It

So I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m a pretty awesome wife. A tomboy at heart, I encourage the video games, geeky (Star Wars, Star Trek) and sport-themed movies, gross stand-up comedy, the numerous fantasy sports, the list goes on…

The one thing I can’t get behind? Fighting. Seriously, what sane human being wants to see another get mutilated? Anyone says “me!” is a sicko. Sorry, the truth hurts.  Or maybe you need a lil therapy? I dunno, maybe I’m just a big wuss on this one, but I can’t bear it.

So when the Mister proclaimed that he wanted to watch all of the Rocky movies on blu-ray (he is obsessed with Amazon’s “Deal of the Day” and couldn’t pass this one up), I warned him it’d be a hard sell. But as always, he wore me down. He may have bribed me with pizza, but that’s neither her nor there. People, I fold like a lawn chair. I must remember this when I want him to let me watch my trash (Real Housewives, E, etc.) — he won’t even let me have it ON if he’s in earshot — probably because he’s afraid he’ll like it ;)

Anyway, A few weekends ago, we cuddled up and spent a good half of our weekend like this:

Upon seeing the first punch, I darted under the covers, plugged my ears and hummed a song. Even hearing the punches was too much,

The Mister: Shannon, you have to watch

Me (under the covers): I can’t!

The Mister: But you HAVE to!

Oh, do I, Mister? DO I? Do you HAVE to watch the catfights between the Real Housewives? Yea, that’s what I thought.

But so it continued…for 5 installments.

And you know what? I kinda loved it. Except for the real bloody parts. And when they had to cut his eye – that was totally unnecessary and NOT cool. My favorite part of this series though, was Rocky’s love for Adrian. I like to think that that was the main theme and driver behind these movies. Yea, the fights were cool, but I think most would agree that Rocky wouldn’t be Rocky without Adrian. So next time your Mister,Misses, girlfriend, boyfriend, friend or dog wants to watch something you might not like, give it a chance. You might just enjoy it. And at the very least, they’ll owe you one ;)

What stuff do you watch to make you significant other happy?

  1. Girl I am just the same way; I watch every “guy” movie under the sun, have been known to grab a halo controller so that my boy can play with our guy friends when I’m over (even though I’m laughably bad at it), and never complain about watching sports.

Going along with some of their ultra-guy activities does have it’s perks, though, beyond just having material to use when getting them to see a chick flick. It helped me discover a genuine love for bad western flicks and gambling movies, like 21 and pool hall junkies. Who’d have thought?

    Great blog!!

Mr. M has made me watch Rocky too, ugh. Personally I couldn’t get into it. I really hate Silvester Stallone, he bugs me.

However, Mr. M has gotten me into UFC fighting. I know. Although, the beer that comes along with it might be the reason.

  3. I’ve watched the whole HBO WWII series, Band of Brothers and The Pacific. They were very bloody but historically informative.

My Mister secretly likes the Real Housewives of the OC (not the other cities tho) and makes me wait to watch them with him… shhh… don’t tell!

I’m the same way! I can handle zombies, I can handle splat-stick, but I can’t handle the fight scenes. Too visceral or *something*, but it turns my stomach something fierce.

Hmm…what do I watch for the Amor? He’s madly in love with football, so in the past couple years, I’ve learned everything there is to know about the sport and have even accompanied him to a couple games. I’ve even gone on to cheer for *his* team when it was playing against *my* team.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today, btw. I’m actually already a reader of yours, but never commented before now. :D

I am a HORRIBLE girlfriend and I dont compromise with many shows. I use the excuse that we dont live together, and its MY house where we watch tv. I tell him when he pays half the rent he can have an opinion. He doesnt like that.

That said, I actually quite liked Rocky too . . . it really surprised me.

This made me laugh b/c you are SO like me in that situation. Craig (the bf) ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS has sports on. It could be anything from football to tennis to golf to baseball. WHO KNOWS. If it is titled ‘sports’ he is watching it no doubt.
Well…I get a bit sick of sports when watching them 24/7 so I have to steal the remote..and pretend like somehow it ended up in my hand. ;) He’s good about watching Housewives of NY & NJ with me- he actually likes them..& I also have him hooked on The Hills- he is now more hooked than me, I could care less. LOL!

I watch curling which I find very boring. My husband also gets on t.v. show kicks that he finds on HBO… we watch season after season of them in a row… I get very bored of the same show but he loves it.

I had to laugh when I read this cause my boyfriend is ALWAYS making me watch war movies with him. At first I suffered through them, but now they’re some of my favorite movies. Cold Mountain, Thin Red Line, Platoon, they all have more than JUST war and fighting going on, so you learn to appreciate them as a whole. (Like you said, Rocky’s love for Adrian)

And of course afterwards we watch a chick-flick, so I win twice. :)
