Daily Delish – MELT

Confession Obvious statement: I love cheese

OK, that’s an understatement. I ADORE cheese. I CRAVE cheese. I DREAM in cheese. You get the point. Me and cheese are pretty tight.

For all you other cheese lovers out there, what if I told you I had a brilliant idea? A restaurant where the focus was: cheese. Gouda, cheddar, provolone, blue, you name it, it’s on the menu! Then what if I told you that the featured dish would be a GRILLED CHEESE sandwich — 20 different ways. Grilled cheese and veggies? DONE! Grilled cheese, onions and pierogies? DUH! Grilled cheese with bacon and fried egg? PLEASE! The list goes on…

You’d probably be pretty stoked, huh?

Too bad someone else already thought of it.

MELT.

Lucky for me a NEW location just opened up in my neighborhood (the original is on the West Side).

Melt in numbers:

5: people in our party (me, the Mister, mom, dad, bro)

90: minutes we were told the wait was

3: times we fed the parking meeter

6: times I nagged my mom to ask how much time was left before we got to sit down

1: times she actually asked

115: minutes we actually waited

3: times the Christmas Story played (the run it on a loop in the TVs)

20: plastic lawn ornaments I counted (before I lost track)

24: Grilled cheese sandwiches to choose from

12:  times my stomach growled

3: Sandwiches really I wanted

60: minutes we waited for our sandwiches

3: times I tried to convince my family it’d be worth it

8: iced tea refills

5: happy tummies

Was it worth it? For me, yes. While the wait was really annoying, it gave me time to catch up with my family and spend quality time together with minimal distractions (other than my growling stomach). The food was, as expected, delicious.

I ordered the Grilled Peanut Butter, Banana and Cream Cheese Sandwich.

Dear Melt, next time, don’t skimp on the peanut butter, OK? After waiting for a few hours, I think I deserve more than a tablespoon. Otherwise, delish.

The Mister ordered the West Side Monte Cristo, which included honey ham, smoked turkey, swiss, american, beer battered and mixed berry preserves

He compared it to an orgasm. I had a bite and tend to agree. TMI? It’s OK we’re all friends.

My brother ordered The Big Popper, which had fresh jalapeno peppers, cheddar & herbed cream cheese, beer battered and mixed berry preserves.

I can’t remember what my dad ordered. And I didn’t dare get within his personal space to investigate — I know better than to mess with a hungry man ;)

My mom was a whimp and ordered a salad. Don’t bother, I already made fun of her.

Which sandwich would you have chosen or what would make up your perfect grilled cheese sandwich?

in love with this post – and you!

you are SO funny. seriously. have you considered writing for a living?

  3. I’m not sure what I would have ordered, but OMG, that sounds like a dream come true. I LOVE cheese. I mean, I even like its stinky scent, THAT’s how much I love it, lol.

    Totally worth the wait! :D

  4. We went to Melt on Saturday and arrived 15 minutes before open. There was already a line but at least we were seated right away once they opened. I can’t imagine going at another time. I think we’ll be getting takeout in the future since it’s just down the street from our house.

I ordered the May special, Prime Time Prime Rib Melt, and it was FANtastic. With gouda mashed redskins, a peppercorn crust and provolone cheese, I was in heaven.

My only complaint with Melt sandwiches is that the toppings aren’t evenly distributed. One half of my sandwich was all meat, the other all potatoes. And this is the first time that’s happened. Since I order with the intention of taking half home for lunch the next day, I want all the flavors to be there, not half. Like I got the Hot Italian once and the second half of my sandwich had practically no meat. It was all bread. So not ideal.

I’ve been to the one on the west side and LOVED IT. Some girlfriends and I went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and the wait wasn’t horrible. I split a fried twinkie with one of the girls after lunch….talk about yum!!!

  8. Oh the one you ordered sounds delightful! What a fun restaurant!

  9. Oh gosh…I guess I would have gotten the PB one too…or perpahs the popper? Or the spinach pie?!? How can one pick? I would have to go back several times until I tried them all

  10. Oh my goodness this is a dream come true!!! I would probably order the same one you did – except I’d learn from your experience and tell them to go heavy on the PB! :)

Call me boring, but I always get the plain grilled cheese! It’s delicious. Plus, they have the BEST veggie chili around – try it next time! :)

  13. Oh dear god, grilled cheese is by far my favorite food. I seriously think a trip to Melt might need to happen for me. My favorite is mozzarella + fig jam + prosciutto. Heavenly.

  14. Oh. WOW. All of those sound amazing!!!!!

The best of them all sounds like the jalapeño one. My favorite though is Camembert and Blackberry Preserves on Sourdough. Yes, it’s delicious. However, anything with cheese usually is.

Holy yum, that PB grilled cheese looks amazing!
One of my favourites is to mix shredded or crumbled cheese with mayo and herbs, and use it as a spread. Top with a slice of cheese and veg of choice, and grill.

And that sandwich looks like a monte cristo. Now that’s something that makes my little vegan self want to cheat. Haha. Yummmm.
