Healthy snacking on-the-go

The Mister and I both have lifestyles that require us to travel every now and then. As you know, we went to Columbus this weekend and the Mister is currently in the Big Apple. Instead of relying on unhealthy (and pricey!) fast-food, snacks and beverages, I like to save calories and money by preparing snacks and small meals that are easy to travel with.

With some mindful purchases and a plethora of zip-loc bags, you too can make sure you always have healthy options when you tummy starts to rumble.

You’ll want to make sure that your snacks don’t require constant refrigeration and don’t create a lot of waste (i.e. a peel or core can be annoying to hold on to or have to get rid of). You’ll also want to consider snacks that easily fit into a purse, briefcase or carry-on bag.

Snack ideas:

Beef jerky, nuts, snow peas, baby carrots, fresh mushrooms, grapes, vitatops, apple slices, protein and granola bars, dry cereal/granola, dried fruit, popcorn

A tip: determine the portion size and measure it out into a zip-loc bag. Now you won’t have to worry about mindlessly over-eating! You’ll know that when the snack is gone, so is “snack-time.” This will prevent you from loosing track of all your “handfuls”

What are your favorite on-the-go snacks? Why?

I am all about the Ziploc bags or bins. Carry them along and eat them up.

  2. Shelly says:

I really like the little individual squeeze packs of Justin Almond and Peanut butters when I’m on the go.

  4. I like to pop 100 calorie bags of popcorn and put in ziploc bags for road trips! I always keep an apple in my purse for any traveling, even around town for the day. I also rely on jerkey and pretzels (portioned into snack bags). :)

We love Larabars in our house. They’re so good, and so good for you!

  6. Rose says:

Almonds – most definitely. And Larabars are a must too!

I usually just pack bars, Clif or Luna. Sometimes I’ll buy 100 calorie snacks because they’re already bagged into individual serving sizes. When I’m stressed about traveling, I don’t want to bring snacks that take too much effort to put together.

I love little edamame snack packs (they have them in spongebob & dora the explorer haha). Also some kashi crackers with laughing cow light swiss wedges. mmm.

  9. I am all about packing healthy snacks for traveling– nuts, trail mix, dried fruit, and lara bars are all favorites of mine!

  10. I always try to pack healthy snacks when traveling – most of the time I’ll stick with my snack, and other times I’ll indulge a little.

My favourites are fruit and veggies, Vega Whole Food bars, Lara bars (homemade!), nuts, dried fruit. If we’re traveling somewhere where there’s a fridge (like my parents for a weekend), I’ll bring yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, and almond milk (and all the fixins!) for a Green Monster. Sometimes having some dry cereal (Kashi!) on hand is good, too!

I really try to stick to natural foods, though, rather than those 100 calorie packages. I find that they’re not worth the money and they’re full of additives and preservatives and just not good for me anyway!

I usually snack on fresh fruit or a half of a Lara Bar…however most of the time this half becomes a whole especially when it’s the peanut butter cookie one :)

seems like youve hit the nail on the head! I love apples, almonds, bars, etc.

  14. What a great idea! And love the idea of using a zip lock bag for portion control :)

  15. Jenny says:

I am a huge homemade trail mix fiend! my favorite combo is pretzels, almonds, raisins, and chocolate chips

  16. Mmmm I forgot about Vitatops!! I usually have trail mix, clif bars, homemade baked goods…. more trail mix…

  17. Beef jerky is a staple in our travel. In fact, I only crave beef jerky when we travel whether it’s by car or by plane!

Other items that we bring – PB & J and whole wheat bread and wasabi peas (these are so spicey, you can only have barely a handful anyways!)

  18. Tina says:

I love Pure bars. And Trader Joes sells individual packets of trail mix that hold me over nicely.

  19. Hannah says:

I almost always have a little baggie of cereal, nuts, or dried fruit on me, just in case. Saved me many times!
