Try it – Making a big decision

Try It

A couple weeks ago, I talked about how to ask for a raise or promotion. Many of you found the information helpful (good!), but I received a few emails from people on the other end — as in, they were lucky enough to get approached with another job offer, or were being offered a promotion and weren’t sure how to make a decision. This reminded me of several scenarios the Mister and I have dealt with personally (both job-related and not job-related) and I thought it might be helpful to put some exercises together to aid you in making a BIG decision. Maybe you are trying to decide between schools, or maybe you are not sure what career path to take (read my post: So, what do you want to be when you grow up?). Big or small, we come head-to-head with decisions on a daily basis. Now some are a little more intense then “do you want fries with that?” (the answer is NO!), but nevertheless, here are some great tools to help you along the way.

Weigh your options

Make a pros and cons list — it may seem trite or dumb, but it’s not. Start listing all the pros and cons you can think of, for each possible outcome. NOTHING is too small to put on the list. For example, a con could be as simple as — “my new office would smell funny” This exercise should help take everything that’s swirling around in your head and start to organize and make sense of it.

Be an actor

Move over Julia Roberts, YOU will be the star in these scenarios. Close your eyes and go somewhere quiet. Now play out each decision in your head. Imagine each decision/job/situation as a separate movie. Who are the characters? What is the scenery? What are your lines? Imagine yourself taking each path. Now, which character do you want to be?

LIST IT

Make a list of your priorities. Which job fosters more of them? How will this decision play into the overall balance in your life?

Talk it out

Enlist your support group (friends. family, etc.) as your sounding board. Make sure to tell them that you don’t expect them to have all the answers, but just having someone to talk to will help you get your thoughts out. And it never hurts to get another perspective.

If all else fails… do a GUT CHECK

Does one of the decisions just “feel right?” Go with it, it’s normally the right one.

GOOD LUCK!

Have you made any big decisions lately? How did you decide?

  1. Great post!! I’m awful, absolutely horrible, at making decisions. So I can relate!! Talking it out really helps me, more than anything.

  2. I am definitely a gut-checker. When all else fails, I know whats right on the inside!

Great tips. I’m a big believer in following your gut. When I bought my condo, I pretty much knew as soon as I walked into the place that I was going to buy it. It just felt right. And I find that talking it over with people after I’ve recognized that gut instinct also helps, because when I talk about it with someone else I can pinpoint WHY I feel as though it’s right and all. It’s sort of a way to confirm my gut instinct!
