Thankful Thursday – Love is in the air…

Thankful

Valentine’s Day. You either love it or hate it, right? Haters, stop wincing. Don’t worry — I’m not going to go all mushy on you and dedicate this post to my undying love for the Mister — been there, done that (love you, honey!) Instead, I’m going to invite you to feel the love this Valentine’s Day.

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always LOVED valentines day. I was transfixed with the shiny, colorful transformation that happened in most drug/grocery stores and adored the way it made me feel all tingly inside — magical, almost. I remember taking a simple 3 x 5 piece of wood and painting it white, pink and red, attaching wooden hearts with superglue. I’m still not sure what I was planning on doing with it, but that’s not the point — I was hooked. From the adorable cartoon valentine’s cards to the ill-tasting conversation hearts (they taste like chalk, people!), I couldn’t get enough. My mom, always trying to make everything special, would give me and my brother a special treat or gift that she knew would make us smile. This tradition continued throughout the years and in college my friends looked on enviously as I opened my big box full of pink hearts and tissue paper, revealing a new sweater, PJ’s or yummy treats. My smile would last all week.

My point in sharing all of this is that you don’t have to have a boyfriend, girlfriend, “friends with benefits,” husband or wife to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Sure, that can be fun too, but the whole point of the holiday is to reflect on LOVE. And love comes in many forms, doesn’t it? Instead of hating on those who are annoying you with their “celebrating,” why not find someone to celebrate with? Maybe it’s your best friend, your parents, sibling – or even your dog! Or perhaps you’ll want to spend the day alone — make it a “you day,” and do everything you love. Cook your favorite meal, watch your favorite movie. No matter how you spend the holiday, just make sure you think of all the people you love. And don’t just keep it locked in your heart and mind — tell them. Why not take this Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to tell those you love just how much they mean to you and how thankful you are for having them in your life?

I’ll start.

The Valentine’s Day I’m thankful for:

Your turn.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

What are you doing this Valentine’s Day? How do you plan on telling the people you love how much they mean to you?

One of my best friends ran a half marathon on Valentine’s Day last year, and I thought that was just the coolest thing. She said it was her “I’m single, and I love myself” moment!

  2. Awww, great post! I’m like you– most of my fondness for Valentine’s day comes from my childhood memories– my parents would set up a scavenger hunt for our presents! I LOVED picking out Valentines and passing them out in class!

When I was little, I used to dream about Vday when I was old enough to have a “sweetheart”. I still love the holiday, though I do think it’s overdone- just give me some chocolate and time with the BF and I’m a happy camper!

WHohooo! I couldn’t agree more. I try to make a “grateful/love list” like you did every morning, but Valentine’s day is a GREAT reason to think about these kinds of things. :-)
