Try it – Mad Men

Try It

If you follow me on twitter, you know that the Mister and I watched EPISODE ONE of Man Men yesterday (armed with my new favorite snack, of course!). Before I get into my thoughts, let me start by saying that the addiction has started. Yes, even though I had to get my stitches out at 9am this morning, we were up past midnight to “just watch one more” (our famous last words).

P.S. YES, I HAVE MY STITCHES OUT!!! I am so much more comfortable and finally feel as if this annoyance is behind me!

Anyway, back to Mad Men — as someone who works in the advertising industry, I’m sure I find certain aspects much more interesting than the average viewer. It is so eye-opening to see how the industry began and how much (and how little!) has changed.

That aside, I want to point out what an amazing job the Art Director does on this show. From the first frame, you truly feel as if you’ve been plucked into the 1960′s – everything is so authentic! I recently read that even beneath the costumes, the actors are wearing authentic undergarments- just to keep things 100% accurate.

The Mister and I both couldn’t believe the role that SMOKING had in everyone’s lives – boy am I glad we’ve all smartened up on that one! I’m also glad that (most) men have smartened up and no longer treat women like inferiors. It was hard not to get offended watching the show — there were times that I was literally rolling my eyes and snorting at the television — these men, acting as if women were so BELOW them, so sub-serviant — it was disgusting. I will tip my hat off to the actors, though. For without them, I wouldn’t be getting so mad — they are truly phenomenal and incredibly convincing.

Now we’re only about 4 episodes in, but I can’t wait to see what happens — let’s just hope I can keep my cool! At least I have the costumes to distract my annoyance towards all the Mad Men — I LOVE period clothing – some of Joan’s outfits are spectacular! (perhaps she’ll inspire a Fashion Friday?! ;) )

Does anyone else watch Mad Men? What do you think?! Who is your favorite character? Who is your least favorite?

OMG Mad Men is one of my favorite shows. My favorite character is Joan because she is a pistol and normally very true to herself. My least favorite character is Ken because I feel like he is a kiss ass. Have fun catching up on 3 great seasons. I would love to hear your reactions.

Mad Men is *so* addicting and Joan is by far the best character. This past season finale was ridiculously good. When does the next season start?!?

  8. I have heard good things about that show. Once I am through Dexter and True Blood, I may have to move on to this!

My mister and I both love Mad Men.

I agree about the art direction and costumes. So authentic and truly believable.

I can’t really pick a fave but do quite love Peggy. :)

I’m so happy to see that you posted about this! My mom got Mad Men for Christmas, and after watching one episode, we were really disappointed. I only half way watched it, since I was on the computer the whole time, but that’s a bad sign when a show can’t hold my attention. Maybe I’ll give it another try now.

I LOVE Mad Men! I got my mom hooked on it as well. As a history major, I loved seeing the culture of the time period – pregnant moms smoking, kids playing with dry cleaning bags, etc. One of the best shows on TV in my opinion.
