Try it- My heart melts for SPELT!

Try It

Good morning, all!

I apologize for being MIA the past few days, but the Mister and I have been living it up in Toronto! I cannot wait to share some recaps!

As you all know by now, we celebrated the Mister’s birthday this weekend. You may also recall the Mister’s undying love for ZA. On our last mini-vacation, we were a bit indulgent with our NYC pizza tour, so we decided to make up for it on this trip by visiting a HEALTHY pizza joint, Magic Oven.

From the Magic Oven Web site:

At Magic Oven, we are proud to offer a diverse selection of healthy pizzas, pastas and sandwiches. Our ingredients are mostly organic and natural and we feature local produce as well as local, free-range meat in all our dishes. Our pizzas can be made to accommodate a variety of dietary concerns – we offer organic spelt pizzas, gluten-free rice flour pizzas and the option of vegan or lactose-free cheese.

Organic spelt, huh? Well, according to one of my favorite sources, the world’s healthiest foods, “Spelt is an ancient grain that traces its heritage back long before many wheat hybrids. Many of its benefits come from this fact: it offers a broader spectrum of nutrients compared to many of its more inbred cousins in the Triticum(wheat) family. Spelt features a host of different nutrients. It is an excellent source of vitamin B2, a very good source of manganse, and a good source of niacin, thiamin, and copper. This particular combination of nutrients provided by spelt may make it a particularly helpful food for persons with migraine headache, atherosclerosis, or diabetes.”

Sounds pretty great, huh? Well SOUNDING great isn’t enough for me and the Mister, we need TASTE, and we’re pretty stringent when it comes to ZA. We show no mercy. As risky as it may have been to put all our hopes and dreams into this spelt pizza (for the Mister’s BIRTHDAY DINNER, too!), we figured it was worth it (and if was terrible, there is always pizza pizza!).

And?

It was…

totally, 100%. worth. it.

The Mister ordered the Tandoori Chicken Magic, which contained tandoori chicken, tomato sauce, ginger, green chilies, red onions, cilantro and organic mozzarella. I was super boring and ordered the Yogi Magic with tomato sauce, organic mozzarella, garlic, fresh sliced tomatoes and fresh basil.

Wowsers! This was SO good. And it tasted so healthy and fresh! Now, don’t be turned off by this ‘healthiness.’ I realize that saying the pizza tasted ‘healthy’ could add a negative connotation – ya know, that it tasted like cardboard, or was lacking in flavor — NOT THE CASE (just want to be perfectly clear).

It tasted healthy because it wasn’t dripping in grease…

It tasted healthy because the veggies were fresh and fragrant.

The spelt crust added a nutty richness that cannot be found in the doughy, white flour crust varieties.

And even though we each ordered small, personal pizzas, yielding 4 slices, they were incredibly filling! And not the icky, “i-just-ate-too-much-pizza-i’m-going-to-be-sick” bloated feeling, but the “i-just-ate-a-nourishing-plate-of-goodness” feeling ;)

For those of you who are interested, I found a pretty great looking Spelt Pizza Crust Recipe, if you’d like to try making your own at home – I love that it incorporates honey!

Have you had spelt before? How did you eat it (bread, crust, granola, etc)?

Don’t forget to bid in the Blogger Bake sale! I’ll update the bid page this afternoon!

I’ve had spelt bread but not spelt crust – I love the way the bread tastes so I’m sure the pizza crust would be good too! I can’t wait to hear about your Toronto shenanies :)
