Work it – Fitting in fitness

If you are like me, at least 75% percent of your workday is spent sitting in an office chair. On days that I can’t make it to the gym in the morning, this little tidbit grates on my nerves like you wouldn’t believe. “We are made to move, not sit at a desk 12 hours a day,” says Joan Price, author of The Anytime, Anywhere Exercise Book. “As ergonomic as your desk or chair may be, sitting produces back pains, headaches, and listlessness. You become less productive.” No. Kidding.

But other than taking a few moments for stretching, can you really achievbe meaningful excercise in your cubicle or office?

According to an artcile from WebMD, there is hope. Kelli Calabrese, MS, an exercise physiologist and spokesman for the American Council on Exercise, says yes, you can. Calebrese believes in 60-second or 10-minute bursts of aerobic exertion. “This is cardio — if you get in your [target] heart rate zone,” she says. And we all know that improving your heart rate variability — your heart’s ability to jump from resting to “pumped” — has been shown to increase longevity and decrease heart disease risk.

Now, don’t blow off your morning workouts or weekly workout routines just yet, but you can supplement them with exercises performed at your desk — which is certainly better than nothing!

Next time you need a break from your work, try the following (information provided by WebMD):

  • Glance at the wall clock and rip off a minute’s worth of jumping jacks. If you’re a beginner, try the low-impact version (raise your right arm and tap your left toe to the side while keeping your right foot on the floor; alternate sides)
  • Do a football-like drill of running in place for 60 seconds. Get those knees up! (Beginners, march in place.)
  • Simulate jumping rope for a minute: Hop on alternate feet, or on both feet at once. An easier version is to simulate the arm motion of turning a rope, while alternately tapping the toes of each leg in front.
  • While seated, pump both arms over your head for 30 seconds, then rapidly tap your feet on the floor, football-drill style, for 30 seconds. Repeat 3-5 times.
  • If you can step into a vacant office or conference room, shadow box for a minute or two. Or just walk around the room as fast as you can.
  • Or do walk-lunges in your office or a vacant room. Set your PDA to beep you into action.
  • No conference room? Take to the stairs — two at a time if you need a harder workout! Do this 5-7 times a day.

Looking for something a little less intense? Lucky you! Price’s book has more than 300 less dramatic — but equally beneficial — exercises. “I call these fitness minutes,” she says.

Some strength-building suggestions:

  • Do one-legged squats (hold onto a wall or table for support) while waiting for a web page to load, the copier to spit our your reports, or faxes to slither out.
  • Stand with one leg straight and try to kick your buttocks with the other.
  • Sitting in your chair, lift one leg off the seat, extend it out straight, hold for 2 seconds; then lower your foot (stop short of the floor) and hold for several seconds. Switch; do each leg 15 times.
  • To work your chest and shoulders, place both hands on your chair arms and slowly lift your bottom off the chair. Lower yourself back down but stop short of the seat, hold for a few seconds. Do 15 times.
  • To stretch your back and strengthen your biceps, place your hands on the desk and hang on. Slowly push your chair back until your head is between your arms and you’re looking at the floor. Then slowly pull yourself back in. Again, 15 of these.
  • Desk pushups can be a good strengthener. (First, make sure your desk is solid enough to support your weight.) Standing, put your hands on the desk. Walk backward, then do push-ups against the desk. Repeat 15 times.

Don’t forget about the little things…

  • Whenever possible, “stand rather than sit,” Price says. “Walk rather than stand.”
  • Walk during your lunch break. If you find that boring, buy a camera and walk around taking pictures. Some experts say it’s ideal to walk 10,000 steps a day — this can be five miles, depending on the length of your stride. “Buy a pedometer, wear it five days, and divide by five,” Price suggests. “If you’re nowhere near 10,000 — and this takes some doing — set a reasonable goal. If you clocked 2,000 steps, go for 2,500.”
  • Join a gym near your office and go during your lunch hour. If your employer provides a gym, that’s even better.
  • Forget emailing the guy three cubes over — walk. (Remember, walks to the vending machine don’t count!)
  • Get NEAT!

Now that my company has moved into our new office, we have A LOT more stairs! While others take the elevator, I make sure to take the stairs between floors daily, on average, I probably climb about 20 flights a day! I always try and make sure I get in a short little walk during my lunch hour, as well. After researching and reading the tips I provided above, I can definitely be doing more to counteract my sedentary desk lifestyle here at work. Bringing some small hand-weights to keep at my desk probably isn’t such a bad idea. I’m sure it’d work as a fantastic stress-reliever, too. Mad at a co-worker? Instead of pumping your fist into his skull (I mean….er, yelling…), pump some iron!

I want to hear from YOU! How do you fit fitness into your workday?

Daily Delish – Spicy Chicken Pizza

Need a light dinner or a tasty snack? Make a pizza! That’s right, PIZZA!

First grill up some protein… Chicken, Shrimp, Tofu — anything will work!

Next select a low calorie, high fiber flat bread such as flat out wraps.

Top with marinara sauce, cheese (I used fresh mozzarella- can’t beat it!) and fresh veggies (I used mushrooms and red peppers). Add your grilled protein and season liberally with red pepper flakes and your other favorite spices!

Try it – think Organic bars and online deals

So the Mister is kind of obsessed with ‘deals.’ Specifically online deals. Hey, I’m not complaining, because last week he forwarded me a deal on Think Organic bars (from Amazon.com) with a note stating that he took the liberty of purchasing two boxes! While I was thrilled with his sweetness and generosity, I have to admit I was a bit worried. We hadn’t even tried these bars before! What if they were horrible?! I’d be stuck with having to pretend that 30 putrid bars were palatable! (hey, I don’t ever want to hurt the Mister’s feelings!).

From the Think Organic Web site:

Our think Organic bars are made with the highest quality organic ingredients that are simple, pure and delicious. We believe pure whole foods are potent-they build strength, energy and beauty, invigorate and delight. Our belief inspired the creation of the think Organic bar. We harnessed the power of nature to bring you a delicious source of true vitality.

Because it’s so great, I also wanted to share the top 10 reasons listed on the Web site on why you should eat think Organic bars.

Ten Reasons to enjoy Think Organic bars:

  • Organic products meet stringent standards
  • Organic food tastes great!
  • Organic production reduces health risks
  • Organic farms respect our water resources
  • Organic farmers build healthy soil
  • Organic farmers work in harmony with nature
  • Organic producers are leaders in innovative research
  • Organic producers strive to preserve diversity
  • Organic farming helps keep rural communities healthy
  • Organic abundance. Now, virtually every food category has an organic alternative

I bolded the items that resonated with me.

After watching Food, Inc. I think we are all, more than ever, looking for more opportunities to embrace organic foods and practices.

Well this is all fine and dandy, Shannon, but how did they taste?!

Lucky for the Mister me, these bars were DELICIOUS! We both LOVE them and wish we would have purchased even more!

First up for evaluation was the chocolate coconut. This bar reminded me of the chocolate coconut LARA BAR, which makes a lot of sense since the ingredients are so similar. However, this bar was a bit smaller so it was a lot lower in calories, making it a better light snack option for me. I loved that the bar had whole almonds throughout — it added that crunch that I love!

Think Organnic Chocolate Coconut

Think Organic Chocolate Coconut

INGREDIENTS
Organic dates, organic cashews, organic unsweetened coconut, organic cocoa (alkalized), organic unsweetened chocolate, pectin, organic almonds.

I loved the cherry nut because it contained chunks of dried cherries, which added a sweetness to the nutty base, without over powering the bar. One of the problems I have with the Cherry Pie LARABAR is that the tart cherry flavor is so overpowering! I know that some people enjoy that intense, fruity flavor, but it isn’t for me. This bar incorporates fruit in a more understated way, making my taste buds quite happy ;)

Organic Dates, Organic Cherries, Organic Cashews, Organic Apricots, Organic Walnuts.

I go back and forth with which of the two bars are my favorite flavor because they were both so delicious!

Have you tried think Organic bars? AND Do you take advantage of online deals? What is one of the best food products you’ve purchased online?

Daliy Delish – My name is Shannon and I’m a garlic twist addict

So I may have mentioned my obsession with Pasquale’s Garlic twist rolls once or twice before. Do I need to hit you over the head with it people?! I LOVE THIS STUFF!

Of course while the Mister and I were in the beautiful and picturesque Westerville, Ohio this weekend, we stopped in for dinner. We NEVER go to Columbus without stopping at Pasquale’s. EVER. In fact, I’ve craved the stuff so badly that I came THIS CLOSE to convincing the Mister to drive down there (2 hours) JUST to go to Pasquale’s…(he didn’t budge).

But this weekend, AHHHH, I was able to reunite with my sweet mistress…

I’m honestly salivating at the very THOUGHT of these rolls! I’m immediately regretting not having them freeze me three dozen to take home (I’ve done this before — like I said, I’m obsessed!) They are deliciously doughy and perfectly seasoned with garlic and salt. The twists come with mouthwatering sauce, too. The rolls are not the same without this sauce! While still quite delicious, these rolls really are ten times better with the homemade sauce. If you are ever in Columbus, promise me you will pay a visit to Pasquale’s. Your (and my! – since I’ll be living vicariously though you) taste buds will thank you.

OK now it’s your turn, which of your favorite dishes would you drive two hours (note: I want to go on the record saying I would trek around the WORLD for these doughy delights!) to enjoy?

Make it – The Best Peanut Butter Cookies EVER

Warning: These are not healthy. At all.

Warning: If you don’t want to be tempted to eat the entire batch in one sitting, do not make this recipe. If you want to be remembered as the person who makes the best peanut butter cookies known to man, make them NOW.

The Mister and I went to Columbus this weekend to visit two of our best friends, Peter and Tiffany. Tiffany is the definition of a domestic goddess. Every time we go down to visit she whips up some amazingly fantastic dessert that puts the Mister and I into a state of euphoria. In fact, we always make sure we work out extra hard for a few days before heading down there so we can enjoy her treats without worrying about calories or fat (all about balance people!). This time, she concocted the best peanut butter cookie I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting (and trust me, I’m a cookie gal, I’ve had my fair share!). And this time, I was able to snatch the recipe so I could share it with all of you ;)

Tiffany used a recipe from Smitten Kitchen, which was adapted from a Magnolia Bakery Recipe (click here to read about my experience at Magnolia).

Tiffany would want you to know that she altered the recipe a bit and we all feel that she actually managed to make them taste BETTER. These are the changes she made:

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter chips
  • 1/8 cup milk
  • OMIT  chocolate chips

Omit chocolate chips, you say?! How dare she! Well, If you are looking for a true, decadent peanut butter cookie, you’ll want to omit them, as well. While chocolate is amazingly delicious, the addition of the chocolate chips distracts from the creamy peanut buttery goodness. The peanut butter chips melt into the cookie so beautifully, you really don’t need anything else. Tiffany made 19 cookies from this recipe and each cookie came in around 250 calories, which, yes, is quite a bit for ONE cookie, but I guarantee it’ll be some of the most decadent, delicious calories you’ve ever tasted. I ate 5 of these over the course of the weekend. Good thing I went running on Saturday morning! Like I said, all about balance ;)

Like I’ve said before, if you are going to splurge on a treat, please make sure it’s a delicious one. I PROMISE you these cookies are worth it ;) And I DARE you to eat just one.

What cookies do you think are worth the splurge? Do you have a favorite recipe or bakery favorite?
