Try it – Healthy Apps

I got an iPhone, I got an iPhone, I got an iPhone!! MUAHAHAHAHAHA. Actually, the Mister got the new iPhone and I inherited the one that wasn’t good enough for him anymore he graciously gave the one he’s been taking such good care of — it’s as good as new! This may come as a surprise to you all, but technology kind of hates me. In fact, I repel it. Let’s debrief, shall we? I’ve dropped my old phone in the toilet (don’t worry, it was CLEAN water) and bathtub (just let it sit in a bowl of rice, works like a charm), and pieces of it were actually missing from being dropped so many times (concrete, tile, puddles, kitchen floor, etc.). I’ve gotten almost every computer virus known to man (how am I supposed to know I shouldn’t click on the link in an instant message that says ‘CLICK HERE!’?) and I’ve broken the printer at work too many times to count. Let’s just say me and my company’s IT person have become fast friends (at least that’s what I tell myself — I’m sure he loathes me)…you get the picture. Me + technology = disaster.
Needless to say, the iPhone took a bit of getting used to. (don’t worry though, the first thing I did was purchase a case!) One of the things I’ve really enjoyed exploring, though, is all the great healthy-themed applications! (or apps, as all the cools kids say it).
My favorite one thus-far is ‘Lose it!’ Now I know calorie counting doesn’t work for everyone, but for me, it really helps me get back on track (like you know, after I gorge myself with NYC cupcakes and za.) One of the other things I really like about Lose it! is that it keeps track of your nutrients. I for one, always have a pretty hard time making sure I get 20-30% of my calories from fat, 20-30% from protein and 40-60% from carbs. With Lose it!, the application automatically charts all of your nutrients and percentage breakdowns. It’s a fantastic tool to get a top-line overview of what you are putting into your body– bonus? IT’S FREE!
I’ve also purchased an app called Nutrition Calculator. For $2.99, this application houses nutritional info for popular restaurants (not just fast food!) such as: Cheesecake Factory , Aladdin’s Eatery, Bob Evans, First Watch, California Pizza Kitchen, Carrabba’s, Cosi, Jamba Juice, Nordstrom Cafe (so excited about this one!!), PF Changs, etc, etc!
Much like calorie counting or journaling, I’ve noticed that using these applications has made me more cognizant of what types of food I’m putting into my body. I’ve already increased my protein intake to make sure I hit the ideal percentage breakdowns. I’m not sure if I’ll use this application on daily basis or if I’ll just use it as an occasional check-point or a tool to get back on track after letting loose a little bit.
It’s pretty remarkable just how much technology can aid in our fitness and health efforts. Check out the two links below for additional healthy iPhone applications.
