Daily Delish – Taking myself out to dinner

Daily Delish

So as many of you know, my first few nights in NYC were spent sans the Mister ;(

I arrived in NYC on Monday night and had a media luncheon and desk-side appointments to prepare for and administer for work, so the Mister didn’t meet up with me until Wednesday night.

Well I certainly wasn’t about to sit around my hotel room alone! I was in NYC! I took a bit of time to explore and yes, treated MYSELF to a nice dinner out.

While I’m a very independent person, I’ve never dined at a nice restaurant by myself before! Sure, I’ve grabbed a quick salad at Whole Foods or The Stone Oven, but I’ve never eaten alone at a ‘nice’ restaurant.

I guess there is a first time for everything…

My hotel was located just a few blocks from Times Square, which as many of you know is tourist central! While there is definitely a place for touristy adventures, I didn’t want to end up at a touristy location (think Fridays!) for dinner. It was then that I remembered a great restaurant I had breakfast at last time I was in New York. Surprisingly, it was just off of Times Square!

I took my time walking to the restaurant and soaking up my surroundings.

While there was A LOT to look at, I couldn’t help but noticing some people sitting in — what’s that? LAWN chairs? Times Square actually closes off two major streets and sets up a lounge area so you can sit, relax and people-watch. SO COOL, right?!

I eventually made my way to the Brooklyn Finer Diner.

From the Web site:

Celebrating American ethnic dishes found all over Brooklyn, the menu features the kind of real food you crave to eat, just like your mother used to make…only better. Every part of Brooklyn is represented by Jewish, Italian, Irish & other ethnic favorites. And every childhood fantasy is fulfilled by the enormous desserts, all baked on the premises every day. The memories of a party at the Brooklyn Diner will make your guests smile for years to come.

After looking at their elaborate menu, which had many healthy, tasty looking options, I ordered the Perfect Plate: choice of grilled organic salmon or grilled shrimp, house made hummus, tomato, cucumber and feta cheese; served with mesclun salad and toasted whole wheat pita. Since I had enjoyed a salmon salad earlier in the day, I went with the shrimp.

It was delicious! Just look at that giant hunk of feta! I was a bit reluctant at first — after all, how often do you eat alone in a nice restaurant? But I actually enjoyed it! I was able to people-watch and slowly eat my food to my little heart’s content. It was nice to have some ‘me’ time to reflect on my trip and relax.

After dinner, I continued to walk around Times Square and eventually headed back to my hotel to videochat with the Mister and catch up on blogs!

For those who are interested, I stayed at The Grace Hotel — I loved it!

Have any of you taken yourself out to dinner before?
