Daily Delish – Throw me a bone, people!

Daily Delish

Toe bone connected to the foot bone

Foot bone connected to the leg bone

Leg bone connected to the knee bone…

Remember singing “Dem Bones?”

Ah, bones.

Pretty important, no?

We all know that including calcium in your diet plays a big part in bone health, right? But did you realize just how important this mineral really is? When your calcium intake is low, or calcium is poorly absorbed, bone breakdown occurs because the body must use the calcium stored in bones to maintain more urgent biological functions such as generating a heart beat, nerve and muscle function.

In addition, according to the article “Bone up on calcium’s other benefits” on MSNBC, “calcium is also needed for normal muscle contractions (normal function), blood clotting (without calcium, blood won’t clot), and normal nervous system activity (nerves would not be able to carry messages). Recent studies also show that calcium might have a role in promoting weight loss (separate from cutting calories), preventing colon cancer, relieving premenstrual symptoms, regulating blood pressure, and preventing heart disease.”

I also find that most calcium treats, such as milk, cheese, etc., do a pretty great job of coating my stomach and quieting a grumbling tummy. It should be no surprise, then, that one of my favorite afternoon snacks is cottage cheese.

Cottage Cheese

Cottage Cheese

I find that this lil guy does wonders in getting me through the afternoon until I can enjoy dinner with my Mister.

I would have loved to share more photos, but cottage cheese always looks kind of disgusting when photographed – not the most photogenic!

What’s your favorite way to take in some calcium? I’ll be enjoying some yummy frozen yogurt tonight, so I think I’m set ;)

ALSO — I am going to be out of town most of next week and was thinking it could be a great opportunity for some of you to guest post. I will need a featured eat every day I’m gone for the daily delish (6 total). In addition I’ll need a ‘Make it’ Monday – featured recipe; ‘Try it’ Tuesday – product review (food or fitness gadget); ‘Work-it Wednesday’ – featured work-out; ‘Thankful Thursday’ – post of gratitude; ‘Fashion Friday’ – your style statement or MUST HAVE items; ‘Solve it’ Saturday – how you overcame a major obstacle in your life and helped find your balance as a result.

Please email me if you’d be interested in guest posting. I’d like all guest posts by Saturday, June 6.

  1. I love to eat cheese, all kinds of cheese…and yoghurt too. (but not a fan of those fruit yoghurt;)
German Quark, kind of like cottage cheese, with 0.2% fat content, is also ideal for making some bread spreads and salad dressing.

Calcium is so very important for us! I work with a program called ‘Calcium, It’s Not Just Milk’ and we teach 8th grade health students the importance of calcium and future bone health. Just some facts – the best time to build bone is between the ages of 9-19 years old, and they need 1300mg of calcium per day (one 8 oz glass of milk has 300mg). After the age of 30 it is harder for us to build bone, that is why it is so important to get enough calcium in the teen years so the body has a good reserve built up for later. Some girls can form up to 90% of their bone mass before they are 17 years old. Interesting stuff! I love cottage cheese too. I usually mix it with yogurt or top it on peanut butter toast. I’d love to guest post a recipe . . . how about grilled jerk chicken with mango salsa over sweet potatoes? I need to get my summer recipes going.

I LOVE my cottage cheese!! I have it daily! I also like yogurt, calcium gummy bears, and other forms of cheese.

  6. Cottage cheese is a huge favorite of mine, and i just got some Adora disks to supplement! I’m sadly, quite low on the calcium front :(

  7. Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I just had the best time reading the story of how you and your hubby met :)

Unfortunately cottage cheese is one of the few things that I just cannot stand! I keep buying it, thinking I’ll magically start liking it, but no go. I like to get calcium from pretty much any other form of cheese and leafy greens.

I’m lactose intolerant so you’d think it would be difficult for me to get enough calcium au natural. But no. I absolutely LOVE yogurt, and as long as it has active cultures, it doesn’t bother my tum-tum. Some people think I’m crazy, the amount of yogurt I eat. I just think: I’m happy.

My go to when I am hungry and on the run is a Nestle Quik low fat chocolate milk. It fills me up for a couple of hours until I can have a real meal. Plus its sooooo yummy!

  10. I love cottage cheese, too, especially over fresh tomatoes and sprinkled with some basil and oregano (dried, unless I have fresh handy). But I also have 4 oz of fat-free yogurt and a small glass of soy milk (chocolate!) to go with my vitamins every morning.

P.S. your blog rocks my socks! It is going on my blogroll even if it means I have to kick my ex-boyfriend off (I suppose there is no reason I would HAVE to do that, it just amuses me to threaten it.)

cheese, cheese, definitely CHEESE! and greek yogurt, too.

  13. Thanks for the comment :)

I keep TRYING to teach myself to like cottage cheese, but it isn’t really working… I don’t like most sources of calcium, aside from yogurt! I loves me some calcium pills, then. ;)

  14. Cottage cheese IS yummy but if I had to pick my favorite, I love yogurt! Any kind of yogurt…plain, Greek, flavored, frozen…it’s all amazing :)

Definitely yoghurt, in any form. Greek yoghurt is even better!!

I take a daily milk supplement called Ensure Plus, which comes in six yummy flavours. It’s thick, lucious and creamy (think milkshake style), and full of calci-YUM too!

  17. I love cheese and yogurt and cottage cheese. I recently also started liking milk. Unfortunately, I didn’t drink a lot of milk when I was younger… :(

I know it seems like common wisdom that we should all be getting more calcium, but it really isn’t true. Few populations get more calcium than Americans, but we have some of the highest levels of osteoporosis (vitamin D deficiency). It is pretty easy to get all the calcium you need, even without dairy. Also, excess calcium causes prostate cancer in men. I’ll write a post on this soon.
