‘Try it’ – MBT shoes, yay or nay?

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it before on the site, but about 3 years ago I had vascular surgery on my leg. Due to who knows what, several veins in my leg collapsed. It caused an unbearable throbbing pain, not to mention a disgusting display of ‘blood blockage’ — i.e. I looked like I had the veins of an 80-year-old, or as my mother so eloquently puts it, cauliflower veins –SEXY!

I had eight of my veins removed and now visit my surgeon regularly for injections in order to prevent further damage. Relax, I’m fine. Aside from the occasional ache or tenderness, due to scarring and poor circulation, it doesn’t affect me. at all. The scars aren’t even that bad - if you squint ;)

One of the best things I can do however, is WALK! Lucky for me, I LOVE walking. It’s my favorite form of exercise. I especially enjoy going on walking dates with my mom. Whether we walk outside or in the mall (DORK ALERT!), we always have a good time and she makes the time fly!

Due to my circulatory issues, it was suggested that I look for a walking shoe that helped increase blood flow to the legs. After a bit of research and trial-and-error, I not only found the best shoes for my circulation, but for my posture and muscles, as well! And the best thing about them? ANYONE can benefit. These shoes are not just for people with poor circulation –HARDLY! Improved circulation is merely one of the many benefits of wearing them.

MBT shoes, coined as “the world’s smallest gym,” have been around for at least 5 years, but have just started picking up publicity – probably since celebrities have started adding them to their shoe collections. MBT shoes increase muscle activity, strengthening and toning the legs, buttocks, stomach and back muscles.

In addition, many have made the claim that the shoes’ unique design helps walkers smooth cellulite.

While you won’t find those claims on the shoe manufacturer’s Web site, MBT shoes have been used in training by Olympic medalists and other top athletes.

According to Swiss Masai Inc., the shoe manufacturer, other benefits of the shoes include:

  • Activates neglected muscles
  • Improves posture and gait
  • Tones and shapes the body
  • Can help with back, hip, leg and foot problems
  • Can help with joint, muscle, ligament and tendon injuries
  • Reduces stress on knee and hip joints

As well as relief of:

  • Muscular Tension
  • Joint Problems
  • Back Problems
  • Leg & Feet Problems

Let me start by saying these shoes do not look like your average Nike or adidas kicks. No, they are a bit more ‘bulky’ (to put it nicely!). The first thing you’ll notice is the thick and curved sole. Setting the shoes on the floor, you’ll see that the sole curves upward at the heel and toe. Yes, it looks a bit odd, but not as odd as the feeling you’ll receive when you first put them on — a sense you might fall backwards – I’m surprised I didn’t! Don’t be alarmed, this is just the shoes’ technology at work! By curving the soles in the front and back, the shoes force you to stand upright directly over your center of gravity. Take a look at this diagram for a detailed explanation.

I wear these shoes for about an hour to an hour and a half at least 3 times a week. When walking was my primary form of exercise, I would wear them for an hour every day. When I first started wearing the shoes a few years ago, my posture immediately improved and my legs started looking like I was spending hours at the gym. Since I’ve continued to wear the shoes, my posture has improved, my legs have gotten stronger and I have far less pain due to circulatory issues.

I only use these shoes for walking. In fact, I don’t think it is recommended that you run in these shoes –I imagine it would be quite easy to break an ankle (for me, the klutz, anyway)!

Sure, I get a few raised eyebrows and interesting looks, but it seems that more people are interested than turned off by the young professional channeling her inner granny! In all seriousness, the company started to create more ‘cute’ and ‘fashionable’ styles. My pair are white and grey with a pink stripe! All I know is that I’ll be staying away from the ‘professional’ styles. Because any tennis shoe made “workplace friendly” is just a fashion crime waiting to happen.

Daily Delish – Salmon skewers

I’m making this quick because the Mister and I are planning on heading out for a walk so we can enjoy this beautiful weather before House starts (love that show!).

Not wanting to spend a lot of time in the kitchen today, I looked to my freezer for guidance. Luckily I picked up some salmon skewers this weekend at the grocery store. So yummy and tasty! The marinade, Bourbon BBQ, tasted fresh and flavorful and I didn’t have to do anything but take it out of the package and throw it in the oven.

Craving some fresh veggies, I roasted some asparagus with equal parts olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice. I sprinkled with salt and pepper and roasted in the oven for 12 minutes at 400 degrees.

All plated up ;)

This meal was light and satisfying and has left me plenty of room for a treat later! I LOVE having little snacks while watching TV! Seriously, it makes me so happy and content to sit down with a lil healthy snack plate and sink right into all the drama!

What are your favorite healthy TV snacks?

‘Make it’ – Basil pesto sauce – no stove-top required!

Good morning! Happy Monday! It is HOT! I’m all for fantastic weather, but what happened to Spring? Last week it was snowing and this weekend it got up to 90 degrees! Crazy, crazy! The Mister and I were SWELTERING last night. We rent an older house that is very poorly insulated (if at all!) and we certainly don’t have central air! (This is #1 on both of our lists for when we buy our own house!)

Anyway, we obviously haven’t had a chance to put in our window unit(s) yet (we have three!), so I had planned on relying on the ceiling fan and open windows. At about 10:30 last night (yes, I’m 80 years old), I ascended into the 3rd circle of hell our upstairs to open the windows.

Hmmmm that’s funny,” I thought. I had remembered the windows opening much more easily.

Looking closer to see if something was off-track or stuck, I noticed white putty JAMMED into the window trim, preventing the window from opening. “Of course,” I thought. The Mister.

Side note: the Mister doesn’t half-ass anything and he always takes all precautions to keep us safe, save money, etc. While this is one of the very reasons I love him so much, it doesn’t always jive with my “fly-by the-seat-of-my-pants-no-worries-here” attitude.

True story: A few weeks ago, our neighbor got “robbed.” I say “robbed,” because I think it was one of his many friends he has over at all hours of the day/night. Also, he lives on the third floor. Why would someone bypass the first and second floor of a house to rob someone on the third?

Anyway, the Mister immediately panicked and started thinking we’d be next. So naturally, when he got home from work he dead-bolted the door. After all, isn’t he our most valuable possession?! Note: We have lived in the house for 3 years and have never once dead-bolted the door. I’m sure you can guess where this is going…

He locked himself inside the house. Yes, you read that correctly. INSIDE. Who does that?

Apparently, when he wanted to get something from his car, the lock got stuck. Since the Mister is incredibly impatient strong, he freaked out and broke the lock. But after a visit from the locksmith and a new deadbolt, we were good as new!

Anyway, the Mister had clearly gone the extra mile yet again with the windows. Upon further examination, I also realized that he had installed little brackets and drilled the windows shut. Remember that terrible insulation I mentioned? Yes, this is the Mister’s way of keeping the heat INSIDE the house. Pretty clever, right?

Maybe in the WINTER! Spring has sprung, Mister — heck, SUMMER is upon us! It is time to de-winterize the upstairs. I know you helped keep me warm all winter and I’m grateful, but it was hard for me to feel that way as I was BAKING in our 88 degree bedroom (I’m not making that up, the thermometer doesn’t lie).

Cursing the Mister and his responsible handiwork, I ripped out the putty, breaking a few nails in the process (don’t feel too bad for me, my nails are pretty hideous, anyway), and managed to get one of the windows open. Now soaked in sweat and dust, I plummeted to the bed praying for a cool breeze. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. ARGGGGHHHH! I tossed and turned all evening waking up caked in sweat — I’m sure I was a gorgeous site to see this morning! (p.s. – I love you Mister!!! Thanks for taking one for the team and letting me share your stories ;) )

So how did all of you sleep last night? Similar problems? Beating the heat?

As I was getting ready for work this morning, I was running through some dinner ideas in my head. While I love to cook, I just can’t imagine laboring over an oven or stove top in this heat! I remember mentioning my low-fat basil pesto sauce a few weeks back and wanted to share the recipe with all of you, since it doesn’t require stirring anything over an open flame – which honestly gives me nightmares right now to even consider!

This sauce is great on top of pasta and also works great on top of pizzas or mixed in with cooked veggies. I’m sure it would also make a great sandwich spread! I would love to try it with some goat cheese on top of some crusty bread—yumyumyum!

You’ll need:

  • 1 package (about 10-ounces) frozen chopped spinach, thawed (make sure to drain it or the sauce will be too watery)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup fresh basil
  • 1/3 cup fat free cottage cheese
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped fine
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt

Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth.

Add to your favorite pasta, pizza, bread or vegetables.

This takes less than 10 minutes to prepare and it is packed full of flavor and nutrients, while being very low in calories and fat. Enjoy!

What is your favorite way to beat the heat?

Daily Delish – Old Mother Hubbard…

The Mister and I have nothing to eat! This always happens to us. We always *think/plan* for going grocery shopping on Saturdays. Naturally, we are stupid enough to put up with the crowds go on Sunday. This means that on Saturday we have no fresh veggies or fruit! You would think we would have learned our lesson by now…I guess we’re just stubborn slow learners.

Luckily, after my amazing experience with Amy last week, I had stocked up on some more of her ‘meals’. I saw today as the perfect opportunity to test one of them out. When I originally spotted the chili and cornbread combo in the grocery store freezer, I knew I had to have it! Let me tell you, I was NOT disappointed!

Amy's chili and cornbread meal

Amy's chili and cornbread meal

I apologize for the sub-par pic! My camera’s battery was dead and I had to use the Mister’s iphone!

This was so incredibly delicious! I was worried that the cornbread would dry out, but it stayed moist and incredibly flavorful! — with ACTUAL corn kernels baked right in! The chili was packed with savory spices (but not too spicy for my wussy palette!) and filled my empty tummy up quickly! My only complaint was that the rice dried out a little, but it was still tasty ;) You can check out the ingredients and nutrition stats here – pretty impressive, eh? Thank you, Amy, for having such fantastic go-to meals ;)

When do you go grocery shopping? What is your go-to meal when you cupboards are bare like good ol’ Mother Hubbard?

Solve it- You asked for it- 25 Random things…

Good morning! Lots to do today- photo shoot, fashion show, errands and getting the Mister chips and refreshments while he watches the NFL draft. ;)

So while I didn’t get any hearty questions (jeez, you guys must have everything figured out – awesome!), I did receive a few survey requests.

I’m sure many of you have seen the ‘25 random things’ survey, and I got a few requests to fill that out. I also got a few requests for the ‘8 things list’ that many of you throughout the blog world have already participated in. I think I’ll save that one for next week.

For now, I give you 25 random things about me:
1.) I believe anything happens for a reason. Call it cliché, trite, cheesy or lame. I don’t care.

2.) The Mister is the best thing that has ever happened to me. period. He is my soul mate, best friend, lover, partner in crime and the only person who understands me better than I do myself. (in a non creepy way ;) ). P.S. you can read our love story here.

3.) I miss performing. I hope I one day have the time to be in more shows. There are few things in this world that are better than the feeling of being on stage.

4.) I am incredibly not graceful. Clumsy, klutzy, awkward, dorky, you name it. If you don’t know this about me by now, I have you fooled. me-1; you-0

5.) Put me in a room with a rat and I will literally go insane. Bonkers — straight to the loony bin. I HATE them. HATE. seriously, grasp the hatred…

6.) I’m kind of obsessed with living healthfully. I HATE when people judge me because of it and I HATE food pushers. I don’t want the other brownie because I don’t want a big butt, OK? Why is that so hard to comprehend? Also– to those who “love” exercise: you lie. Well maybe not, but when I say it I’m kind of lying (at least I admit it, right?) Exercise sucks (p.s. when I refer to exercise I’m mainly referring to ‘the gym,’ because I do really love outdoor exercise like hiking, walking, etc,) — it hurts. we sweat. we make weird noises. we look gross. What we love is RESULTS and the feeling we get AFTER we exercise. But if that’s what you need to tell yourself to get it done, fine, I won’t call you out (I do it, too, it can be our secret).

7.) I think know I am going to make an awesome mom and I can’t wait to have kids . I know the Mister will make an amazing father and I can’t wait to one day have our own little clan (scary, huh?) Two of my very best friends (T&P!– love and miss you xoxo) have the most beautiful baby girl (who I love to pieces). I am secretly jealous. I know after the Mister and I spend a weekend with them we have ‘baby’ on the brain. They make it look so easy! (People, I know having a baby is hard work, I am not suggesting it’d be easy)

8.) For those of you who know me well, you know that when I was a little kid I used to want to be a famous actress. I was so convinced that I would be. I mean I TRULY believed it. I even tape recorded myself on my karaoke machine practicing my Oscar acceptance speech (it pains me to type those embarrassing words, but yes, it is true). I have no doubt in my mind that I could have done it. It’s not arrogance or having a big ego, it’s confidence. I seriously KNOW that I could do it (maybe not the oscar, but at least star in a few films). So what changed, you ask? Priorities. It’s just something I don’t WANT anymore.

9.) I hate talking on the phone. I don’t even like ordering pizza. It’s really bad. I’m trying to get better. I’ve slowly progressed to actually being able to order food AND ask a question. I still put up a fight anytime the Mister wants me to call somewhere. It’s a work in progress. Also other than my family and the Mister, or if I am expecting the call, I send every phone call I get to voicemail. Take no offense, I have issues.

10.) My mom is my best friend (I’m not just saying this, my mom really is my best friend in the entire world. If you met her, you’d try and steal her to be yours — love you momma ;) ) and my dad is my hero. My brother is pretty sweet, too. My family is so important to me and I am so thankful for the relationships I have with each one of them. Side note: I ADORE my in-laws. They rock. I am so grateful they accepted me into their family with open arms. And, I have sisters now! Good People.

11.) I love good food. Even unhealthy good food – everything in moderation, people! My favorite foods of all time — Pasqualles bread sticks WITH dipping sauce, Westerville, Ohio; Ginos Pizza, Ithaca, NY; Giordonos Pizza, Chicago, IL; Pita bread and soup — TAZA, Woodemere, Ohio; Fried Banana, Amazon Trail, Twinsburg, OH (RIP); Carmel Corn, Solon Movie Theatre (also at Chagrin); Pumpkin Ice Cream with Marshmallow Swirl; Handel’s Ice Cream; Character Cookie, Giant Eagle; Pretty Woman Sushi Roll, Sushi Rock, OH; Pancakes (various flavors); The Bongo Room, Chicago, IL. ‘The salad‘; Stone Oven

12.) I hate that people judge me before they get to know me. I am a nice person. I am a good person. Don’t judge people based on pre-conceived perceptions or rumors, judge them by the interactions you’ve actually had.

13.) I converted our 3rd bedroom into a closet. It still isn’t big enough.

14.) My life is better than I could have ever imagined.

15,) I look forward to getting older and all the experiences the future will bring.

16.) I am terrible at ‘grown-up’ stuff. I’m really unorganized with bills, receipts, etc. I procrastinate having to do anything like making doctor’s appointments, etc (I think this is mainly due to my phone phobia). It drives the Mister CRAZY.

17.) I can fall asleep anywhere, anytime.

18.) Although it didn’t really come across this way, I didn’t really like high school. I love everything I did – activities, etc. But I always felt like I didn’t fit in anywhere. I hated all the drama and couldn’t wait to get out. I only talk to about 3 people I went to high school with.

19.) All of my best childhood memories were in the company of my very best friend, Tracy — truth or truth, dirty dancing routines, ghostie, rachelle, ‘put the song in my hand,’ snow white, cheese pickles ketchup and tomato, ouija, elvis’ ghost, california raisins, teddy and hannah, “walk? now? halfway? bye.” the list goes on…. I miss you

20.) My best friends are usually guys. ‘Girly girls’ can be catty, judgmental, jealous and annoying (no offense). I did however meet two of the most amazing girls in college. I have no doubt that they are 100% of the reason why I loved college so much. We are so much alike and different enough to keep things interesting. I miss you girls more than you know. I love you to death and really hope we’ll get to see each other more often. SMA.

21.) The summer before college was probably the greatest summer EVER. Scavenger hunts, late nights at Denny’s, weekends at the Cocos, spending $5 and sitting at Friday’s for 5 hours, Josh having to wait 12 hours in a car garage, getting stranded in Columbus, movies in my parents basement- guys, thanks for the memories. And thanks for accepting me into your family ;)

22.) I can’t wait to REALLY travel the world with the Mister. There are so many things I want to experience with him. So many things I want to see. I can’t wait.

23.) I think know I am the best wife in the world. Don’t get me wrong…I wouldn’t be the best wife to anybody, that’s not what I’m saying. But for the Mister? I’m the best wife in the world. That makes me so incredibly happy. If I tried to explain it to you, you’d puke. I love our relationship and I love that we’re crazy, madly, deeply, wildly in love. Because really — is any other way worth it?

24.) My father is the best man in the world. He can do absolutely no wrong in my eyes. I have so much respect for that man and anyone who meets him always feels the same way. He is the most selfless, gracious, humble and generous man I have ever met. The fact that I have made my father proud is one of my biggest accomplishments. I will always be my daddy’s little girl — breakfast every Sunday, stamp collecting, ‘Goodnight Moon,’ Indian Princesses, camping (side note: I’m fairly certain my dad HATES camping), the list goes on. I love you, Dad.

25.) I earned my black belt in karate. Even though I’ve been out of practice, I know I can kick your butt. I’ve broken a guy’s arm before…that’s another story, though.

That’s all. I’m off! Have a fantastic day — it’s beautiful out there!

Your turn, tell me one random thing about YOU.
