The Mister and I are getting ready to catch up on our American Idol, courtesy of the DVR so that we can watch LOST live — can’t wait! — but I needed a small snack to tide me over until we share our usual popcorn or ice cream treat.
I went with a great stand-by, that also often puts my sweet tooth at bay.
a FIG!

Whole Foods Organic Figs

Mr. Newton would be proud!

Pretty sizeable, no?
Figs, as explained in an article on The World’s Healthiest Foods Web site, tout many nutritional benefits, including:
Great source of potassium, a mineral that helps to control blood pressure. “Since many people not only do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, but do consume high amounts of sodium as salt is frequently added to processed foods, they may be deficient in potassium.Additionally, figs’ potassium may also counteract the increased urinary calcium loss caused by the high-salt diets typical of most Americans, thus helping to further prevent bones from thinning out at a fast rate, ” the article explains.
They are fiberlicious! As we all know, Fiber and fiber-rich foods may have a positive effect on weight management.
High in calcium, figs also help promote bone density.
Wanna know the best part? They truly taste like candy! Even better, actually, since they have a freshness that processed candy can never attain.
Do you like figs? How do you eat them? I’ve had them mixed into my oatmeal, which I think tastes fantastic! I’ve also heard that people eat them with peanut butter– has anyone tried this method?

I love figs. I like them best just by themselves, although sometimes we even get the odd fresh fig off my parents’ trees which is a real treat.
I’ve only had figs in Fig Newtons (which I love) and Vitatops. I haven’t made my way to go au naturale with them yet

Yes, I like figs. I didn’t know that they were such a good source of potassium. Thanks for the info!
I’ve never tried figs — I will have to pick them up next WF trip!
Hmmmm … maybe now’s not the time to tell you that in our new garden we have not one but two (TWO!) fig trees. If I can figure out a way to dry them …
Don’t be hatin.’
Figs are just some darn sexy fruit! I love figs!
I just had them in my crepe, which I only just posted about! soooo good!
when you get a house, you should be sure to plant a fig tree. they live forever, get huge and pretty, and produce more fruits than you could preserve every year.
I haven’t tried frigs. Looks tasty though… and I love whole foods. Ah, it’s heavenly.
I love figs! My favorite way is to eat them “straight up” or slice them up in a salad. Yum! I am intrigued about the pb combo… hmm, maybe I should try it for a snack tomorrow since I have both ingredients on hand
