‘Try It’ – Donuts for breakfast!!! Seriously ;)

Try It

First of all, hello new readers! Thanks so much for stopping by! Just a quick reminder that the blog makes a lot more sense if you start here and read this.

One of my favorite traditions/childhood memories was going out to Saturday morning breakfast with my daddy. I think this was originally my mom’s idea, probably wanting to get me out of her hair so she could clean, fold laundry and get stuff done around the house without my high-pitched squealing adorable and endearing voice echoing in her brain. But the outings eventually became a weekly staple. Dad and I would normally go to Denny’s or Bob Evans, where the wait staff eventually learned our orders. I don’t remember what I ordered, or really much of anything about the breakfasts, except that I relished the one-on-one time with my dad. It was our special little date. I remember feeling so special sitting at the table, just like a big girl, as my dad and I enjoyed our pancakes — probably with extra syrup ;) My dad and I have always had a special bond and I’m sure that these breakfasts only helped strengthen and solidify our special relationship. How could breakfast do anything but HELP bring two people closer, anyway? see Mister? THIS is why i must have a scrumptious breakfast every morning ;)

Anyway as my brother and I both got older (yes, he eventually joined us on the Saturday morning breakfast excursions), our schedules got a bit more complicated and we got better at staying out of Mom’s way. While we would still go to breakfast with my dad, it wasn’t a weekly event anymore. But, my dad being the kinda guy he is, still wanted to make Saturday mornings stand out, and would often let us pick out doughnuts for a special treat! My favorites were always the ones with the sprinkles! What, does that surprise you? ;)

Over the past few years, as I’ve re-adjusted my lifestyle to make room for healthy habits and less room for unhealthy ones (like eating 2-3 doughnuts in one sitting! — that was my snack of choice for watching American Idol!), I haven’t had a doughnut in a LONG time. Too long, I think!

Anyway, I was recently slacking reading a magazine on the elliptical at the gym and came across a little blurb about a company that claimed they had finally cracked the code on creating a healthy donut. “Yea, right!,” I thought. How could that possibly be?

Well I did a bit of investigating (like anyone with this newfound information would!) and things got interesting.

I soon learned the name of the company was Holey Donuts and after reading their story on the company Web site, I knew I had to try their creations.

Holey Donuts was generous enough to send me 4 boxes of donuts, providing a full variety of the company’s offerings.

The Mister and I decided to split two donuts a day, so we could each experience every flavor.

The first two we tried were the coconut cream pie and low-fat chocolate.

Coconut Cream Pie:
Described as the company’s best selling-donut, I was excited to take my first bite. As directed, the Mister and I popped it in the microwave for 20 seconds. I think this time works best on the doughnuts that do not have a filling. We ended up microwaving this for an additional 45 seconds. The verdict?

O.M.G. There are no words.

OK, I’ll try. This was the best thing I have eaten in a LONG time. Holey donuts, is right! The texture was phenomenal — light, airy, but still doughy with that remarkable taste that is only found in a donut. The frosting was gooey and warm from the microwave and the cream filling tasted just like coconut cream pie. I could have eaten an entire box of these! And at 209 calories and 4 grams of fat a pop, I wouldn’t even do THAT much damage!

At 149 calories and 3 grams of fat, the low-fat chocolate was just as decadent. Gooey warm chocolate, paired with the doughy, sweet ring of heaven was nothing short of breathtaking.

The Mister had no words. One of the only times he’s ever been speechless! We immediately wanted to try every other flavor, but finally calmed down and decided we could wait.

Over the course of a week, we tested the following:

Raspberry Graham

Raspberry Graham Cracker (217 calories, 3.9 grams of fat)

Low fat vanilla crumb

Low fat vanilla crumb (148 calories, 3 grams of fat)

Blueberry Crumb Cake (218 calories, 3.8 grams of fat)

This was the Mister’s favorite flavor. He LOVED the blueberry filling.

I saved my favorite (THE BEST) for last. Get ready people, this is going to make you drool.

This tasted exactly like a Cinnabon. I honestly couldn’t beleive it! Cinnabon used to be my favorite part of traveling. Why? There is one at every airport! In fact, in the Cleveland area, I think the only Cinnabon is at our airport. When the Mister and I started dating I told him that Cinnabon was one of my favorite foods. It’s funny because shortly afterwards, I learned just how mny calories and grams of fat each gooey bite of heaven contained. I haven’t had once since. The Mister has been convinced that I LIED to him about Cinnabon, since he’s never seen me eat one!

This Jumbo Cinnamon Bun from Holey Donuts was so incredibly amazing. I really cannot say enough great things about it.

I haven’t had a donut since the last time I was pregnant (and that’s when I consumed MORE than my share.) I’m blaming it on hormones, and I’m sticking to that story. ; )

Thanks again for taking the time to send me such good questions. I had to let each of them marinate for a while, before I was ready to answer them!

What a great “figure-friendly” alternative. My office has community breakfast every Friday and while it’s great for team building, it’s not so great for my thighs. I’m on the calendar in two weeks. I know what I’m bringing :)
